Dating a Vegetarian
November 2010

So you’ve found a potential match.  You like the same music, you get each other’s humor, like the same movies, both like to travel and take long walks on the beach.  Everything looks great and you’re heart jumps a beat as you get ready for that first date.  You make your way to the restaurant to enjoy an intimate dinner when out of nowhere your date drops the big “V” bomb. They’re a vegetarian or worse… a vegan.

So is it a deal breaker?  It’s not like they smoke cigarettes and you have asthma. But let’s face it, you’re a carnivore and that’s simply something you’re not willing to change.  You start to wonder…What’s next? Tree hugging?  Will you be subjected to countless, painful hours of yoga classes?  Your heart drops and the excitement quickly fades.
But don’t give up just yet.  One important thing you need to know is that not all vegans and vegetarians are trying to change the world.  Many of us simply make this a personal lifestyle choice to suit our own personal health goals and don’t try to force dietary restrictions upon those included in our lives.

The good news is this is a pretty low hurdle to jump and compromise is easily attainable.  The first thing to remember is that most restaurants offer vegan and vegetarian options.  Even if you end up at a steak house, there are usually several side dishes one can choose from that when combined, can make a complete and delicious vegetarian (or meat free) meal.

When it comes to selecting restaurants, most of us dine out in a limited circle, meaning we have our favorite spots we like to revisit.  Finding these places together can be a great first step in building a relationship. Take the time to check out menus online together and finding places that suit both of your needs and give them a try.  Once you’ve discovered five or six places, stick to them.  This way you build a circle of places that become special for both of you.  Just remember to be honest.  Make sure you both like the places and make them meaningful for both of you.

What about eating at home?  Don’t let this intimidate you either.  Overall it’s fairly easy and can be another great way to share some quality time. You can learn how to accommodate each other without giving up the foods you love.  If you’re cooking, ask the vegetarian to join you in the kitchen. Uncork a bottle of wine and cook together. Chances are most vegetarians know how to make meat free alternatives to just about any dish you’d want to prepare.  You may be surprised, but nine times out of ten I eat the same thing as my partner, just a vegan variation, and it’s not difficult to do.

So when it comes to dating a vegan or vegetarian, the key is to conquer and not let it divide.  Just go for it!

Women: Workout to great thighs, slim hips and a firm butt!

The holidays are around the corner and that we know what that brings… WEIGHT GAIN!  For women it tends to fall right into hips, thighs, and butts also known as the “problems areas.”  You work so hard during the summer months to stay thin.  Then the weather changes, holidays roll in and you give in to allowing your body to be mediocre again.  Not this year!  Attack this problem early and you will limit the drop off during the holidays and keep your body smoking.

Since these areas are usually a problem for most women it is important to give these areas special but very sensitive attention.  Squats have to be the #1 exercise for toning these areas. You activate your glutes quite a bit when rising up from a squatting position.  Squatting is a compound movement so it involves multiple joints and multiple muscles.  You can tighten your thighs, hamstrings, glutes, and hips with just this one exercise.  Get creative with squats.

Try them single leg, on a bosu ball, or with dumbbells.  This will spice up the workout to take your body to another level and really bring out sexier curves. Another great exercise is lunges.  They are excellent for your thighs, glutes, and hamstrings.  A basic lunge is great, but you can step the intensity up by grabbing some dumbbells, reverse lunges, or even performing a core twist at the waist at the end of the lunge.  The higher the intensity the better your body will respond.

Try lunges in combination with a minute interval on the StairMaster.  This will surely take your workout to the next level as you will get your heart rate elevated, as well as tighten and tone at the same! The hamstring curl machine is perfect for helping lift your buttocks.  Your hamstrings sit right underneath your glutes so firming this area will give your butt a strong, firm and lifting look that is so hard to achieve.

The opposite of this machine is the leg extension which is usually located right beside the hamstring curl machine and helps isolate, and tone the thighs. Working the two together is a great combination. A great cardio machine is the StairMaster which is perfect for the complete lower body toning effect and fat burning.  Try this 3x a week in connection with the exercises lined out above.

Getting these areas in top shape is a tough process.  It involves eating right, working hard, being consistent and cardiovascular work to keep excess fat away.  But don’t wait until it’s too late!  Start now and get your body right and when the holidays roll around you will only need maintenance of these areas to stay in great shape.

Fall Fashion: The Sweater
November 2010

When choosing the right sweater  make sure you get select one that is flattering to your body type. Of course the trendy slim fit is stylish but it isn’t for everyone. Have fun with whatever you choose and try to stray away from the grandpa knits and a jolly Christmas prints. Cheers!

Fall Fashion: The Scarf
November 2010

I don’t understand why more American men don’t wear scarves. I personally think scarves are one of the best staples a man can have in his closet. They give you an automatic sex appeal if you pull it off right. Try a plain jacket or sweater with a plaid, or colored scarf for that extra pop. One long enough to wrap around two or three times would be best. This gives you enough room to play and allows you to wrap it your personal style. Have fun!

Fall Fashion: The Pea Coat
November 2010

When it comes to coats there are certain qualities you should look for: style, comfort and fit. The Pea Coat was designed in the 18th century by a Dutch farmer for his son who was going off to the navy. The recruit’s coat was admired by a petty officer and a supply of coats was ordered. Shortly after the pea coat became a staple of the naval uniform. Nowadays, the coat is used more as a layer you would throw over a nice button up or t-shirt on your way out the door. Don’t forget your keys!

Fall Fashion: The Boot
November 2010

It’s finally the time of year when you can lace your kicks up past your ankle and not sweat your self into dehydration. Pull out those old vintage boots from your closet, or even hit the town in search for a new pair to kick around in. The more classic the boot, the better.
