Krochet Kids intl: Kohl, Stewart, Travis

Our product exists to provide women with meaningful work, so they can provide for their families and plan for a brighter future. Interview with co-founder, Kohl Crecelius.

Krochet Kids intl founders started crocheting hats for friends & family not knowing it would take them on a journey of empowerment and humanitarianism for women in underdeveloped countries.

Who are the creators of Krochet Kids intl. and their backgrounds?

Kohl Crecelius, Travis Hartanov, and Stewart Ramsey are the co-founders of Krochet Kids intl. Our relationship traces back to high school in the Pacific Northwest where we started our entrepreneurial journey with a custom, handmade headwear company. In the early 2000s, we began crocheting winter headwear for our friends, and it quickly stemmed a thriving local business. We were dubbed the “Krochet Kids” by a local newspaper, and the name stuck.

Why/How did Krochet Kids get started?

Today, Krochet Kids intl exists as global lifestyle brand the produces and sells its items on multiple continents. The journey that started with crocheting in high school took a dramatic turn when we began traveling and volunteering internationally during college. We learned firsthand about global poverty and the ways that traditional international aid often falls short of creating long-term empowerment for individuals and communities.

Specifically, in our travels, we met people in Northern Uganda who had lived through a 20-year conflict instigated by a rebel army group. Though hundreds of NGOs and aid organizations were there, our interactions with people on the ground provided an unambiguous message: “They didn’t want more handouts. They wanted to work.” So we traveled back to Uganda in 2007 and taught them the skill we knew — crocheting — and re-launched our headwear project on a global scale.

We love the empowerment of women from these villages. Was this done on purpose?

This is the purpose and the whole reason for us starting Krochet Kids intl. Our product exists to provide women with meaningful work, so they can provide for their families and plan for a brighter future. Today, we work in both Uganda and Peru to do this.

How has helping these women impacted you on a personal and professional level?

Their story and my story is so intertwined that it’s hard to see where one ends and one begins. I was fortunate to set out on this vision at a young age. My friends and I were 20 at the time of launching Krochet Kids intl. so it’s my entire professional life. Personally, I consider myself very fortunate to witness the resiliency of the human spirit. It changes everything.

Are you strictly online or can we find products in brick-and-mortar locations?

You can find us online and in-store. We work with large national retailers and hundreds of independent boutiques across the country. Check our website for a full list.

What are your plans for growth and awareness this year?

As of last year, we launched a second company called KNOWN SUPPLY with the mission to humanize the apparel industry on a larger scale. Between both our brands, the goal is to establish brand partnerships and collaborations that help to spread this mission. For us, every product we make is hand-signed by the woman who made it, and we get great joy from connecting shoppers to the actual makers who produced their products. This recognition of the people behind the clothing we wear is a crucial point when it comes to improving the apparel industry today. Learn more: http://makers.knownsupply.com

What non-profit organizations do you partner with?

We partner with the non-profit CAPABLE to take our impact efforts to the next level. When we talk about wanting to see women and families empowered, it goes far beyond creating jobs. CAPABLE augments our work and the services we provide by including an education curriculum and a local mentorship program to the women we work with. They help us to give a much more holistic approach to empowerment.

What additional support do you need at Krochet Kids to get the word out about the brand?

As I mentioned before, we are always looking for partners that are passionate about the way we do business. This could be influencers, brands, or other organizations who would want to sell or promote our products. Reach out is that’s you!

Any shout outs?

Always. It indeed takes a village. Shout out to KNOWN SUPPLY, our east and west coast showrooms by The Park Showroom, Kimberly Goodnight at Media Playground PR, and OBVIOUS for your help in sharing about what we do!

About

KK intl. is a lifestyle brand reimagining apparel production, as well as the relationship between consumer and producer. Every apparel and accessory item we make is fully constructed at our facilities in Uganda or Peru. Each piece is hand-signed by the person who made it, and their profiles can be viewed on our website.

Our mission is to empower people to rise above poverty, and we do this through a multi-faceted and measured approach to poverty alleviation. By providing jobs, education, and mentorship within impoverished communities, we are equipping women with the skills, tools, and resources they need to work toward their own independent futures free from the help of any aid organization (ourselves included). We have empowered hundreds of women and their families through our high-touch and effective programs thus far. We look forward to working with partners who make that impact exponential.

Designer: Mass Luciano

Mass Luciano (MASS) has consistently remained stable over the last two years not allowing any distractions from their core vision. This Hong Kong-based brand is sure to make traction in the U.S. in no time.

Happy two year anniversary! How does that feel?

Thank you, it feels great! My partner and I started the brand as a way to collaborate creatively two years ago, and it’s very satisfying to see it grow each season.

What have you learned over the past two years?

We’ve learned how to listen and filter other people’s comments, suggestions and advise. Everybody has an opinion on what we should design and how we should do certain things, but at the end of the day, it needs to feel right and fit in with our vision. We love creating statement pieces that are casual without being dressed down. Each style has a visual impact and stands out with a graphic sensibility that’s structured and enhances the male form. Our customers keep asking for more, and we enjoy hearing from them.

Who is your client?

The MASS man is confident, bold and has a young attitude – he’s always effortlessly dressed and isn’t afraid to stand out.

Have you been a designer most of your life?

Yes – I studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles over 16 years ago and started work at Guess Jeans straight after. I’ve had the opportunity to work with companies in Los Angeles, Italy and Hong Kong designing womenswear, menswear and even for kids. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

Mass Collection 01 Mass Collection 02 Mass Collection 03 Mass Collection 04 Mass Collection 05 Mass Collection 06 Mass Collection 07 Mass Collection 08 Mass Collection 09

Where do you get inspiration when preparing for a collection?

From architecture and sports. I’m fascinated with structure and form, function and practicality… architecture and sports have that in common.

Where did you grow up?

I’m an Army brat, so my family moved a lot when I was a kid. My best memories were growing up in Fort Hood, Texas, and Nuremberg, Germany. We moved to Puerto Rico when I was 12 and I went to high school and college there before moving to Los Angeles. Now I live in Hong Kong and have called it home for the last five or 6 years.

Explain how your MASS for Lane Crawford collection came into existence.

We entered Lane Crawford’s ‘The Next New 2016’ competition and won best new menswear brand. Up until that moment, our styles were only available online on our website. We designed an exclusive collection for Lane Crawford allowing our customers to enjoy a luxury retail experience. It’s been a great opportunity, and we’ve just finished our second collection for them.

Being based in Hong Kong, do you find it challenging to tap into the U.S. market?

A considerable part of our business comes from the USA. We sell the collection online, and since online has no borders, geography hasn’t been a problem for us. Our customer base is very international. We have orders that come from all over the globe – from the USA, the UK, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Dubai, Australia, China. It is very international. Plus we provide free shipping on all orders and have a hassle free returns and exchange policy which makes shopping with us pretty easy.

Do you have plans to grow your retail distribution in the U.S.?

Yes! We’re currently stocked at Universal Body in Los Angeles and are looking to expand to New York and Miami in 2018.

What do you know now that you wish you knew two years ago?

First of all, say goodbye to a traditional Monday to Friday 9 to 5 work schedule. That’s the first thing to go out the window. Your personal and work life are continually overlapping as there is always something that needs to get done, or drawn up, or posted. It can be hard to separate the two, especially in the early days when you are setting up, but you need to make sure your private life does not suffer. Also, because we’re a small company, you have to be prepared to do things that usually would not be within your scope or remit and learn new things quickly.

Finally, and most importantly, don’t sweat the little things – remember that everything happens for a reason.

Abstract, collage artist Osiris Azar talks creative process and how he started his unique style of fine art. Raised by a single mom with 3 sisters, Osiris joined the USMC allowing him time to find his voice.

Q&A

Age: 29

Who or what inspires you? I started making collages before I picked up a camera. I took a photography class just to use as a spark plug and one of the photographers we were authorized to report on was ‘Frederick Sommer’. His subject matter wasn’t even close to my aesthetic but all I needed to see was “collage” in the description and there was no stopping me to continue making my art as dope as possible until I couldn’t be overlooked.

What’s your creative process? Once the subject is chosen. I go thru dozens, at least 100 magazines a page at a time selecting and removing subject matter. I cut out everything by hand, design the layout by hand. Then I take a picture and begin the post-production fine tuning until I feel like it’s ready.

How long does it take to produce one art piece? 1 – 4 weeks.

Where did you grow up? Benton Harbor, MI

Tell us a little about your upbringing? Raised by mom. Only boy. Three sisters. Started in performing arts schools, but was pulled out in 4th grade. Everyone around me tried to get me to buy into academia. Joined the USMC to buy me some time to figure out things. Didn’t have to fight in the war (ain’t God good). Used my whole GI Bill trying to find my calling.

Osiris Azar Osiris Azar

How long have you been creating your art? 6 years

Finish this sentence: I would call my creative expression _____________. (Abstract)

Dream client you would love to create a custom piece for? Donald Glover.

When you’re not creating, what do you do in your spare time? Create memes or TV. I’m addicted to both.

Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius

Favorite junk food(s): Fruit & Sour Punch Straws. Respectively.

Any shoutouts? H.O.D. C.E.O. Feminism.

Unapologetic fashion designer Vara Ayanna talks how being raised in Phoenix helped her change the narrative of being a super-lit fashion designer.

Q&A

Where are you based? I’m based in Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ (Born and raised Phxgirl 4 life.)

Tell us about your upbringing and how it influenced your style? My upbringing was very Afro-centric, art-based and Church-based. My Mother is an artist and my Father is a Laser Engineer – both of my parents were heavily involved in church when I was younger. I grew up very encouraged to express myself and have my own views, despite being so engrossed in the Black church culture because my mother is an artist. Also, my grandmother is a seamstress so I’ve been sewing, designing and making art since the age of about 4. My whole family is artistic.

I even have a little flower pot I handpainted when I was 5. It has ‘Four things you want to be when you grow up’. I put fashion designer on it (HAHA). As far as this influencing my style – I think it made me rebel a lot of my life. I naturally have a rebellious nature so I really want to give that, “I don’t give a f*** (for mom LOL) what you think about me” attitude about my clothing in my own way.

Growing up Black in Arizona definitely influenced my style. I think it really made me see the world in a different way. Being the only Black kid in your class until like 6th grade is super trippy. I lived on the same street all of my baby years so my siblings and I ( I’m the second oldest of 4 Kids. ) got a different view of the world I believe. My parents and grandparents are all from the east coast so that has added to the influence of being
Black, a woman from Arizona and have a whole family of artist all from New York and North Carolina.

One of my biggest influences is music. Music to me changes the world and how we see it. Music influences my clothing more than anything. I love every type of music even country (SOME LOL). My favorite band is My Chemical Romance. I can def sing any part of most any album (haha). I’m influenced by Hip-hop culture & Black culture, as far as favorite Hip-hop artist. I feel like I cannot comment on all of them but I definitely have a lot of artists that I respect, rep and love their music in the Industry. Hip-hop controls the world and everything is influenced by it. That should tell you how much I love anything trap, anything Hip-hop. I’m also influenced by food, traveling, cultures, art, and many other things. I love fashion. I love style and designing.

You’re a pretty dope Fashion Stylist. Why did you feel the need to start a fashion line?Starting my brand was something I’ve always wanted to do. Yes, I am a stylist but I loved designing and always have. I love designing masculine cut clothing and styling as well. I think me becoming a stylist came naturally after I began designing heavily at the age of 15. I remember just loving everything about fashion, playing with scenarios and looks. Organizing my shoots and shows myself helped me become a stylist as well.

Describe your brand in 3 words. Marauders in three words – Super-Lit, Flossy-4-life, Too-Dope LOL!

Who is your customer? My customer is definitely creative. I feel like creatives, artists, music heads; the people who are into how they look and don’t care about pushing the envelope on what they wear. My customer has always been the individuals and elite creative types.

Vara Ayana - MARAUDER$ World Wide Vara Ayana - MARAUDER$ World Wide Vara Ayana - MARAUDER$ World Wide

Dream celebrity you would love to see rocking MARAUDER$ World Wide? My dream Celebs to rock Marauders – Obama and Michelle; Bey & Jay, Kanye & Kim, Anna Wintour, Cardi B., Iris Apfel, Kendrick Lamar, Migos, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and more.

What do you know now that you wish you knew before you started your collection? I wish I knew how much money, time, and effort I would have had to put into my brands to get them exactly the way I wanted. Fashion is hard. Designing is hard. Being young and chasing your dreams while not knowing what’s going to happen next is hard. I know that it’s all worth it when you get to focus on your art and thrive in the fashion world. I’m very appreciative of the opportunities I have had the pleasure of having so far.

Pumpkin Pie or Sweet Potato Pie? PUMPKIN!

Vodka or Hennessy? Henny

Any shoutouts? Glory to God, honor to my family, my parents, grandparents and my sibs, Shout out to all friends and to everyone who has supported my efforts thus far.

Jae Franklin

Jae Franklin’s much-anticipated second EP is dropping on December 8, 2017, and we’re looking forward to hearing what she has to say. She promises her new EP will be a riskier and revealing set of taboo conversations which has a different flow than her first EP ‘Cheers To Life’. ‘Skeletons’ is her kick-off single and the visual snippet debuted on her Instagram page.

Recently moving back to the States from Abu Dhabi, Jae is embarking on expanding her home base reach and reintroducing Americans to soulful R&B music. The songstress will mesmerize you with a subtle yet high-octave range. She is definitely the one-to-watch in 2018.

Jae was recently featured as one of our cover models for our 9-year Anniversary Issue Fashion Issue. Make sure you pre-order a copy of her new EP now on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.

Who is Jae Franklin? Jae Franklin is an artist. I’m a singer-songwriter. I’m a citizen of the world. I’m pragmatic with a wandering spirit.

Did you always want to be an artist? It may sound weird to some people, but I didn’t choose music. Music chose me. I realized early on that I was different because of the way I expressed myself through music. I feel like I’ve been an artist my entire life.

Your EP is finally dropping soon. Tell us about it and what do you expect people to take away from it? Sometimes society puts us in this box. We think certain topics are taboo. Every song on the Jae Franklin EP talk about the taboo stuff. I’m braver, riskier and more revealing. I think my supporters and listeners will appreciate my candor. I collaborated with my friend Vicente Espi. He produced every song. The sound is effortlessly soulful but we worked to capture my signature style – modern progressive soul.

What’s the story behind the lead single ‘Skeletons’? I wrote ‘Skeletons’ when I lived in Abu Dhabi. It’s one of the most honest songs I’ve ever written. It’s about the uncertainty of our future when our past comes back to haunt us.

We love the mood for the video [Skeletons]. Who was the director? Explain the concept. The music video was directed by Jakoyea Wright. We wanted a deep visual to support the mysterious mood of the song. The concept was centered around the angst over the unknown. The visual captures the emotions you feel when you realize that one past decision could lead to irreparable damage to your present situation.

The creative direction and flow of your Instagram images are visually intriguing. What was your motivation for creating it?  I’m a fan of visual art. I thought it would be cool to couple my love of visual art with my music and aesthetic. The flow of my Instagram page is simply a curated extension of me.

Do you prefer dinner during Thanksgiving or Christmas? I prefer Christmas. ‘Tis the season. I learned about the history of Thanksgiving a few years ago. I was appalled. I wish I had learned the truth when I was younger.

Tell us what to expect at your performance in Los Angeles this coming January? You can expect to hear new music from my new project, The Jae Franklin EP. I love creating special moments too. I’m hype because it will be my first solo performance in Los Angeles.

Any big plans you care to share in 2018? I’m rolling out visuals to support The Jae Franklin EP, hittin’ the road to tour the east and west coasts, and giving back to my community through the arts.

Nicola Gastaldi

3 Words that describe your work? Minimal, Geometric, Mind-bending

Dream brand collaboration(s)? Adidas, Nike, Puma

Where did you grow up? In a tiny town, Cremona, in the north of Italy. Beautiful and dreadful, you had to keep yourself busy in some way not to die of boredom.

A lot of movement and bold colors is used in your work. Why so? I always loved MC Escher and Zbigniew Rybczynski work. They are able to tell neverending stories creating endless illusions. (See video below)

Did you choose 3d media or did it choose you? 3d is a comfort zone now. I’ve been working with it for years. I tried to use perspectives in a different way, though, managing to subvert, in some of my loops, the expectations of the viewer. I also used 2d programs and in some loops, I’ve used just a marker on a piece of paper. ■

The Pharooh’s IG page is unapologetic, sarcastic with a touch of feminism sexuality. We don’t know who runs this page and wonder if the page is curated by a man or woman. Maybe one day The Pharooh will reveal him/herself or maybe they are already revealed conservatively in one of the posts. The feed is mainly a collection of images from other sources.

Mychael Knight

American Fashion Designer, and Project Runway alum, Mychael Knight has passed away. He was 39 years old. Mychael died at 7:25 am EST outside of Atlanta, GA on October 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family and friends. His family asks that their privacy is respected during this time of grieving.

The Knight Family has selected OBVIOUS as their media source during their grievance for any inquiries. We’ve set up an email on behalf of Mychael Knight’s family: [email protected]. We will update you once more information is made available.

Official Statement for The Knight Family:

“We are still processing the untimely death of our son, brother, friend, and uncle. Mychael meant everything to us and we loved him dearly. He was generous and so full of life. This is how we choose to remember his legacy.” – The Knight Family

***UPDATE***
There’s a lot of inquiries and speculation about Mychael Knight’s cause of death and whether it was from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). We do not have his cause of death at this time. Mychael, however, publicly disclosed his battle with IBS via is Facebook Page on July 12, 2017. You can read his post in its entirety in his own voice here. We will provide more information once it becomes available.

I’m still in awe that I’ve created a post announcing his death. Mychael Knight was my friend, my brother, and a voice of reason everyone wants in their corner in the entertainment industry. He was passionate, outspoken, direct, kind, and unapologetic.

I met Mychael in Philly almost 10 years ago. We both were booked to speak on a fashion panel for Radio One. We instantly clicked and became friends. He was a true Southern Gentleman and had no problems telling you that he was from the South. No matter what situation or industry event we attended, he always remained himself. I admired that about him. He loved his family so much and others, it reflected. He was a big Momma’s Boy, his mother was one of his best friends.

When I lost my leg due to a rare form of bone cancer, Mychael helped me get my confidence back. I once complained how designers aren’t making clothes for people like me. Mychael’s immediate response was, “I got you! Give me a few days to sketch something for you.” I said okay cool. Later, I checked my email and there the sketches were. I cried. I saw the vision. That’s me, I said! What my friend did for me changed my attitude about how I looked and boosted my confidence beyond words.

Mychael Knight Sketches Mychael Knight Sketches Mychael Knight Sketches

When our schedules allowed us to hang out, we attend various red carpet and industry events together. He would come over to my apt and vice versa to break bread and discuss how we were going to take over LA (He made the best cocktails!!!). I remember the times when I would try to introduce my version of healthy food options to him and he would say, “I told you I have a taste for a burger Jerris… LOL!” That moment still cracks me up!

Mychael, as I cry typing this, I’m so glad I gave you your flowers while you were here and grateful for the time you spent here. You taught me to continue to stand up for myself in this business. I’m grateful we never allowed egos to compete in our friendship.

I scrolled through your Facebook page and saw the last quote you posted: “Life Tip: Do You.” I felt like you were speaking to me and everyone that you love. I will never forget you.

I love you my brotha from anotha Mother. Until we see each other again.

– Jerris :^)

Later that same year, Knight began his freshman year of college at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. In 2001, this university awarded Knight a Bachelor of Science degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Knight broke into the fashion industry in Atlanta, Georgia by working as an intern at Wilbourn Exclusives in 2001 and then by becoming a Fashion Stylist in the music industry in 2002.

In 2005, Knight auditioned for the second season of the Bravo network reality television series, Project Runway, but he was not accepted as a Season Two Contestant. MaryMe-JimmyPaul presented their unique and edgy Spring/Summer 2018 collection during LAFW on Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Alexandria Ballrooms in Los Angeles, CA.

The collection could surely pop-up on various red carpets like the VMAs or The Grammys this coming award season. It’s feminine, bold, and avant-garde to say the least. The designs represent the young girl and/or woman who is not afraid to push the envelope when it pertains to her own personal style.

Tilda Swinton and Björk came to mind while we reviewed the runway show. It screams ‘Unapologetically Being Me’ and ‘I’m a Rebel’. Most of the designs are very dramatic and that’s what we loved most about it. Who doesn’t like a little drama? Fans of the brand will appreciate the use of clear vinyl, excessive roping, and large ruffles. The collection would have been perfect for the new Blade Runner 2049 movie.

Though the artistic creations aren’t for every woman, it will indeed create watercooler conversations and dialogue whether you like the designs or not.

We’re looking forward to seeing what MaryMe-JimmyPaul and FATBOY collaborate on next.

About Collection

Since 2010, duo MaryMe-JimmyPaul has developed a unique approach to fashion, drawing on the duo’s backgrounds in art and architecture. Their colorful, exuberant designs are a constant presence in magazines and on pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Kesha.

The collection was a take on the DIY culture by creating new works ad hoc with what is currently available in their practice, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This process of improvisation on garment making reflects their fascination of the arts and crafts of fashion rather than the demands of the fashion industry.

In perfect harmony, MaryMe-JimmyPaul presented a collection in collaboration with Dutch design company FATBOY. This very special joint effort resulted in a colorful and playful selection of two different outerwear raincoats, called the ‘Almost-A-RainJacket’. A basic, unisex one, made from the leftover beanbag material FATBOY became known for, as well as a deluxe unisex coat, with multi-pocket details and a fun backpack integrated into the back, previously worn by Ariana Grande.

Living in a very exciting time in which feminism, punk DIY aesthetics, and eco-consciousness have converged, they have created a new crafting movement. With help from Dutch Culture USA and a special selection of shoes provided by John Fluevog, MaryMe-JimmyPaul displayed a stunning debut into the LA fashion world with a beautifully detailed presentation.

Interview

You have come a long way. How did you get started in the music business?

I started in the music business singing with my sister, performing for label execs in Houston and around the country. Those opportunities fell through. As a solo artist, I released my two EPs, Universal Language: Prelude 1 and Universal Language: Prelude 2. I also released two more EPs and began traveling and touring with other well-known artists, experiencing life on the road as a working artist.

Originally, you were a duo with your sister, what made you go solo?

I wanted to explore my own voice. I also wanted to grow personally and professionally.

Being a native of Houston, how did the recent natural disaster affect you?

That was my childhood home. It’s still a big part of me. Many of my friends and family were affected in different ways. I was immediately compelled to donate and share information with others about how to help Houstonians.

If you could collaborate with 3 recording artist, who would it be and why?

Maxwell. He’s set the blueprint for emerging artists to create long-term success. Most recently, he showed me love after he heard my remix of his song, Lake by the Ocean. I feel that’s a step in the right direction.

Amel Larrieux. She’s an artist of substance also seems accessible although she’s been in the industry for decades.

Angelique Kidjo. She’s a legend and modern-day chameleon. Oh, the lessons I will learn from her about life, music, humanitarianism, and empowerment one day.

Fried chicken or baked chicken?

Tofu. How ‘bout that?

How do you balance your career and marriage?

I never fake the funk. Neither does my husband. If we’re apart for an extended amount of time, we make sure we communicate on a schedule that works for us.

What do you love about being married?

Marriage is an extension of our friendship.

Do you want children one day?

Yes, I do.

What do you know now that you wished you knew when you started?

I wish I had known that traditional marketing wouldn’t be as valuable as digital marketing.

Favorite genre of music?

Soul music, especially soul music created around the late 70s.

Tell us about your latest single?

Love is Not Hard has a clear message. It’s about loving you. It’s about loving people who rub you the wrong way. They need love too since they don’t understand how their actions hurt other people. Love is Not Hard was digitally released in September. There’s live, soulful music throughout the song.

Love is Not Hard was produced and mixed by David Kennedy, who most recently mixed the latest A Tribe Called Quest album We Got it From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. The artwork was created by Nick Liefhebber.

Do you plan to drop a full album, EP or mixtape?

The Jae Franklin EP drops in November.

What do you feel is hindering you from getting your ‘big break’?

With the right amount of effort and quality content, I think my journey will blossom just as it should. I’ve learned that inconsistency versus consistency plays a big part. Digital marketing and branding are huge.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

I feel that there is space for everyone. There is an audience for everyone. The current state of music is starting conversations about politics and good versus evil. It’s sparking movements and building communities. It’s empowering people. It’s bridging the gap between generations. More artists are creating content with important messages. The current state of music is important and groundbreaking.

Is the music industry fair to the

independent artist?

Life isn’t fair. I wouldn’t expect the music industry to be any different. There’s music then there’s the industry. It’s good to have an understanding of both. Indie artists have to stay in the game. We have to be well-rounded. I don’t have a big machine behind me yet. I have to create content consistently. I have to wear a lot of hats, which takes more time to execute. From digital strategy to marketing to music, I have to make sure my music is created and released. Ultimately, I’m determined to reach music lovers, executives, brands, and potential corporate sponsors.

Where can we see you perform live in the future?

I will be performing in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York very soon. Check my website for more details. http://www.voroso.co.

Favorite quote from ‘you’?

A mistake on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

Romper or Dress?

Depends on the day.

Any regrets?

Nope. None at all.

Any shoutouts?

Big shoutout my husband, parents, and sister. Another shout out my supporters, my creative peers, and out to music. Last shout out to the Universe. I see you (Universe) shifting things in my direction.

Rove Hotel Lobby

Rove Hotel Dubai offers a calming atmosphere for the Wanderlust or leisure traveler looking for peace and serenity after a long intercontinental flight.

While traveling back to the United States from a much-needed vacation in The Maldives on Emirates Airlines, we had a 20-hour layover in Dubai. Needing a place to stay, we searched for hotels on booking.com and the Rove Hotel Dubai Downtown stood out. Often times when you book online or via an app, hotel images don’t look the same in person. This was totally not the case.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by their very friendly front desk staff and impressive decor. It felt like we were entering a friend’s home who works as an artist or art buyer. From the eclectic light fixtures, artistic graphics along the hallways, as well as the inspirational quotes throughout the hotel and inside of the rooms, the hotel was a visual delight.

The room was quaint, comfortable, and clean as you would expect when you first enter your hotel room. Their comfortable beds were topped with soft clean white linen. The rainforest shower head and the amputee-friendly shower entrance were great and thoughtful added touches.

Breakfast

We opted for a ‘breakfast included’ rate when we booked the room. At first, we assumed we were going to get the typical buffet-style breakfast. We were so wrong. The restaurant staff provided us with a carefully curated menu that offers a variety of hot food, including vegan and vegetarian options. One of our personal favorites was the Quinoa salad with fresh tomatoes with romaine lettuce. There was an array of fresh juices, fruits, and bread to choose from. If you wanted the traditional American breakfast, they offered that as well.

Rate

$85 USD plus fees ($109.26). Rate varies on time of booking and location of the room.

The experience was a breath of fresh air. The Rove Hotel offers 5 locations throughout Dubai. The property we stayed at was across the street from the famous Dubai Mall and the iconic Burj Khalifa.

TASHARRI'EL WEBB

Standing at 5’9, TaSharri’El Webb uses Social Media to her advantage and we are here for it. This Detroit native is the one-to-watch currently in the modeling industry.

about

Agency, if any: BMG Models & Talent ATL

Age: 18

Height: 5’9

Instagram: @sharrwebb

YouTube Channel: Sharr’s World

Where were you born? Detroit, Michigan

Ethnicity: African-American

Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius

TASHARRI'EL WEBB

Favorite things:  FOOD! LOL, Fashion! Makeup! Money!

What music are you listening to at the moment?  Frank Ocean, Pink+White; Dreezy, Worth It; GoldLInk, Crew

Favorite movie, tv show: Clueless and Charmed

Favorite designer, fragrance or beauty product: Chance by Chanel. It seems as if people just flock towards me when I wear that fragrance.

What would you be doing if you weren’t modeling? If I wasn’t modeling I would be an actress.

What’s something uncool that you love anyway? This is so embarrassing but I love playing hide and seek. I know that I’m probably too “grown” to be playing childish games but it’s just so fun and it gives me a rush.

What’s the best thing about your hometown/country? Two words … CONEY ISLAND.

Place you would love to visit: Dubai!

Which brand would you really love to model for? VICTORIA’S SECRET !!!

Favorite modeling experience so far? My favorite modeling experience would have to be when I shot with Derek Blanks. The vibe was great and the shoot was very ME in a way. I felt confident which is kind of odd to me because the only two things I wore was a pair of jeans and a leather jacket (no top). I felt so comfortable with myself. There were also a couple of celebrities there while I was shooting and they were praising me as if I were them, it was a cool experience.

Currently, you’re obsessed with/about? Rihanna’s new Fenty Beauty Highlighter!

3 Words that best describe you as a person? Loving, Angelic, Goofy

Any shoutouts? Shoutout to my mom, (Tai’Sheree) she is AMAZINGGGGG! She pushes me to be the BEST and to love and value myself regardless of how or what anyone else may feel, think or say. She’s never given up on me and the fact that she loves me unconditionally in a world that can be full of hatred is calming to my soul. I admire everything about her, her strength, her dedication, her beauty, her insane amount of confidence and most of all her INTELLIGENCE.

Thank you Zharria (my sister) for always loving and admiring me. The fact that you’re only 6 years old and you defend me even when I’m wrong just blows me away. Thank you, Serenity for just being an all around great friend.

I’d also like to give a shoutout to Jerris Madison. You are an ICON. You’ve known me since I was 7 years old and you were the first photographer I’ve shot with. You’ve always had a very kind and loving spirit. I just want to thank you for giving me this opportunity!

CHOCHENG, under the Creative Direction of Cho Cho Cheng, Spring/Summer 2018 Collection did not disappoint with his superb tailoring and subtly dramatic runway show. His attention to detail to the hair, makeup, and styling of the show was also spot on. Though the collection was inspired by the 1957 film, ‘Witness for the Prosecution’, it had a modern day ‘The Stepford Wives’ vibe, however, his design aesthetic was chic, sexier and consistent.

The runway show, carefully curated, kept the attention of the attendees without skipping a beat. Women can mix and match the entire collection while keeping Cho Cho Cheng’s voice while incorporating his designs into their personal wardrobe and can be worn with heels or low-top sneakers.

This was our first time attending CHOCHENG fashion and witnessing his impeccable designs. We are new fans!

THE COLLECTION

TÉMOIN – The collection is inspired by the 1957 film, Witness for the Prosecution, starring Marlene Dietrich and the glamour and femininity as exemplified by her personal wardrobe during the golden age of Haute Couture from 1947-1957. Comprised mainly of separates and knits, the collection features a seductively fitted silhouette — jackets and dresses with nipped-in waists and padded shoulders are structured in supple cotton bouclé and finely heathered tweeds of cotton and linen, with touches of embroidered silk lace and signature handmade petals and fans as an embellishment.  Striped cotton sweaters are layered to enhance the classic tailoring with nonchalant modernity.  Braided knit cardigans and neatly cropped jackets are paired with demure knee-length skirts and shorts, softened with touches of silk crepe.  Inspired by Andy Warhol silkscreen portraits of iconic celebrities, the collection is rendered in vivid shades of rose, lavender, violet, and red.  Hand embroideries with natural glass beads impart drama and mystery, with a whimsical touch.

ABOUT CHOCHENG

CHOCHENG is a womenswear designer label launched by designer Cho Cho Cheng, who studied fashion and costume design at the Parsons School of Design and took an apprenticeship in Savile Row, London to study traditional British tailoring. The first CHOCHENG store opened in 2010 at 838 Madison Avenue, New York, followed by a second store in 2015 at Seasons Place, Beijing.

CHOCHENG’s bespoke and ready-to-wear collections are known for their meticulous detail and 100% natural materials. All fabrics are sustainable and produced in Europe, many exclusive to the label. All garments are hand sewn in London following heritage Savile Row tailoring techniques.

About Samantha Leibowitz

Samantha Leibowitz grew up in the Philadelphia Main Line and is deeply influenced by the arts and surrounding culture. She was raised alongside some of the most well-known representations of architecture, museums, and gardens in the North Atlantic region and decided to be a designer back in 2007 when she was in the eighth grade. Leibowitz launched her career on the Fashion Board for Nordstrom at age fourteen and began to immerse herself in the realm of fashion while expressing her love for the industry. She later completed Drexel’s Summer Fashion Program and then hosted a fashion show with fifty of her designs before even graduating from high school. She completed her studies at West Virginia University and became a certified colorist, majoring in Fashion Design and Merchandising with an emphasis on Business. Her company was officially launched in August of 2015 and in 2016, she launched her eponymous apparel line during New York Fashion Week.

Samantha Leibowitz’ versatile and art-inspired collections graced Fashion Week with a bold, independent, and adventurous style. This collection promoted an eventful and exciting lifestyle, with the theme of ‘texture’ while remaining down to earth. That is where her philosophy comes from; it is everlasting designs from “dawn until dusk”.

Spring/Summer 2018 Collection
Dreams Part II: “Foxes Live Under the Rainbows”

Claudia Li’s Spring Summer 2018 collection explores the surrealism of childlike dreams. Teetering between the real and unreal, the collection draws to memory the playfulness and whimsical nature of a child’s curiosity and her ability to boldly enter another world, despite the unknown lingering at the edges.

The play on shapes this season focuses on the organic. Light silks and jerseys are draped and brought together into hanging tulip and cocoon silhouettes, while cottons and denims provide a contrast with structured, boxy shapes. Oversized rain drop-shaped buttons accent tops and outerwear.

Referencing the colors of Akira Kurosawa’s film Dreams, vibrant yellows, pinks and reds are joined by darker undertones such as deep blues and evergreens, adding a tinge of mystery. Original floral prints of goatsbeard and tulip are layered into the collection.

Claudia Li introduces the Kete bag – a leather flower basket shape featuring an inner drawstring silk pouch.

ABOUT CLAUDIA LI

Claudia Li is a New York-based designer brand focusing on creativity and true craftsmanship. Combing an artistic design aesthetic and an emphasis on details, the brand has successfully gained industry attention in its brief history through its ever – evolving play on silhouettes, shapes, textures, and dimensions. Each season, Li paints a story to express emotions and abstract experiences into a tangible collection with personal sentiments that resonate with viewers.

As Creative Director and founder of the eponymous label, Li’s background in fine arts is visible throughout the brand. Prior to her professional career as a womenswear designer at J.W. Anderson, Li worked at Haus of Gaga under Brandon Maxwell. Li studied at Central Saint Martins before obtaining her MFA in fashion at Parsons School of Design.
