A huge earthquake has struck off the coast of Chile. The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that it’s a magnitude 8.0 – which is enormous. Some estimates are saying it was 8.2.

The Northridge, California earthquake from 1994 was 6.7 – and was the second costliest disaster in U.S. history, after Hurricane Katrina.

The one in Japan in 2011 was a magnitude 9.0 – and spawned a devastating tsunami.

The one that just happened in Chile has resulted in a tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. The tsunami threat to Hawaii was still being evaluated. The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center was also working to determine the level of danger for Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.

Chile is on the so-called “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines circling the Pacific Basic that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
