Interview
Love her or hate her, she could not care less. This lady is confident and comfortable in her own skin. I happen to love her, and why wouldn’t we. Thomasina Atkins, better known as Goo Goo, is more than just a wardrobe stylist. Known for her outspoken personality on the hit WETV show Mary Mary, she is a woman who is not afraid to say what’s on her mind and never apologizes for being who she is. She is educated, talented, loving, caring and oh yes, She is FABULOUS.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Goo Goo for some “obvious” chitchat…
Rashi Pinckney: Where did the name Goo Goo come from?
Goo Goo Atkins: The name Goo Goo came from the same place all black people nick names come from. You know how we do “Tee Tee, Bo Bo, Day Day.
RP: Many people do not know that you actually have a background in performing arts., How did you break into styling?
GA: People began admiring my personal style and when money got low I started telling them that I was a stylist.
RP: Do you feel your career will eventually bring you back to your performing arts roots?
GA: I pray that it does. But I want a role the good old- fashioned way. Give me the audition and watch me go in there and kill it. If I don’t… I’ll be sure to the next time.
RP: Do you ever feel pressure to behave a certain way or dress a certain way because you are the sister of a Gospel singing duo? If so, how do you deal with it?
GA: No. My convictions are mine. I don’t let “people” run me. My pastor knows pretty much everything I do. If I need a good checking, he’ll definitely get me together. The same goes with my mom.
“I would tell my younger self that’s it’s okay to be me. I was in such a shell growing up. I didn’t know I was the ish yet.”
RP: We recently witnessed you go through a tough breakup. How did that experience change you, if at all?. And what did you learn most from that experience?
GA: Well it changed me for the better. I envisioned myself in the future with my ex and I realized that it wasn’t what I really wanted. And like I do everyday as an entrepreneur, I dared to take a risk. That day’s risk was to acknowledge and accept that I had been wrong in what I thought was “the real thing”. I followed my good mind to woman up and do what was best for me despite my emotions. I learned that it’s okay to want what I want in a relationship and it’s okay to be wrong.
RP: Do you regret making your relationship public?, Do you ever feel that played a part in you and Justin’s break up?
GA: Hmm… While I will use more discretion next time around, I am a pretty open person. I’m not that shy. So folks will know,. but I won’t shout it from the mountaintop.
RP: Are you currently dating?
GA: No, I’m not. Not one bit. No sign. No trace of anyone.
RP: If you could have a conversation with your younger self, what would you tell her?
GA: I would tell my younger self that’s it’s okay to be me. I was in such a shell growing up. I didn’t know I was the ish yet.
RP: What advice would you give to anyone looking to break into the Industry whether it be as a stylist, performer, etc.?
GA: Be honest with what you want. DO NOT get in this game for validation from “the industry life”. Only real genuine love for the art will carry you through this rough industry without losing your self. Be ON at all times. Even if that means singing all the time. Look fabulous all the time with what have you. Let them find you ON.
RP: What’s next for Le Goo?
GA: Hmm, more great looks, the same big mouth/booty/personality. And who knows, perhaps a show.
