For Lovers Only: Alice Smith & Bilal For Lovers Only - Alice Smith & Bilal

Four-octave range singer-songwriter Alice Smith and Grammy Award-winning vocalist Bilal came together for a Pre-Valentine’s Day concert at the historic Kennedy Center in Washington, DC on Saturday, February 10, 2018, at 8:00 PM.

The beautiful Ms. Smith delivered an artful blend of bluesy, soulful vocals and mid-tempo grooves. Her beautiful silver gown shimmered as the stage lights illuminated it while she gracefully swayed her body back and forth as she performed Nina Simone’s version of “I put a spell on you.”

Bilal

Bilal’s Afrocentric style complemented his energetic performance drawn from Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Blues, and Hip-Hop. He rocked the house and took the audience on a euphoric, spiritual journey. If you didn’t know Bilal, as an artist, before this evening, you left the venue with the understanding that he is an explosion of unapologetic talent.

The historic Kennedy Center’s intimate venue set the tone for the night, matching both of the incredibly talented artists.

G-Eazy

G-Eazy opened The Beautiful & Damned Tour in Houston, TX at the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land on February 15, 2017, with a sense of humility and gratitude. His performance was energetic and wholeheartedly dedicated to his fans. The stage presented simple yet visually stimulating graphics without the need of a ‘posse’ on stage with him to sell his show.

A post shared by G-Eazy (@g_eazy) on

The Oakland-raised artist presented the audience with two vast, slightly transparent tents which projected graphics and inside of these tents without skipping a beat were his two DJ’s on the ones-and-twos. With his signature black, rocker persona, he enters the stage with a calmness allowing a slight build up of anticipation from the crowd and then they went berzerk! The audience lost their minds.

G-Eazy broke his set into three parts to help convey his story:

Part 1: Beautiful

The start of his live performance was about gratitude, why he started doing hip-hop and his influences. A huge thank you was given to Houston for their love and support from the beginning of his career.

Part 2: Damned

The 2nd part told the story of heartbreak and growth. During this moment of the performance, you felt a sense of freedom and redemption. ‘Him & I’ (featuring Halsey) was a fan favorite for obvious reasons.

Elolude. The Hits!

Even though his set ran over 15 minutes, G-Eazy still performed his monster hits, ‘No Limit,’ ‘Me, Myself & I’ and more. His fans sang along word for word until his exit.

Other than seeing interviews of G-Eazy online, I didn’t know a lot about him. After seeing him live and in person for the first time, I was very impressed. The Damned & Beautiful Tour is a must-see this spring. The opening acts for the show were Trippie Redd & Phora with Anthony Russo.

Ryan Darius Nickulas

New York-based hairstylist Ryan Darius Nickulas sits down with us to discuss how he balances fatherhood with his hectic career, long-term professional relationship with Ethel Kennedy and a must-have checklist for men.

You were on LOGO’s The A-List: New York for two seasons. Do you have any plans on returning to reality television?

There are always conversations in the works. I have shot a couple of things recently. I’m still open to the opportunity.

New York or LA?

I will always love NYC!

With the surge of ‘Social Media Hair Stylist’ becoming popular, how do you stay relevant in such a competitive market?

It’s important to keep up with trends BUT stay true to your style as a stylist at the same time. I have had the same clients for over ten years. Staying consistent with my work as we evolve with style and color is my strength.

Ryan Darius Nickulas

You’ve been hitting the gym pretty substantial over the past year. What inspired this fitness journey?

I remember how I felt when my kids were four months old. Jumping down the rabbit hole of fatherhood is insane. I had sleepless nights, stress full days, and a considerable weight gain. I needed the gym for a mental and physical reset. I also wanted to be a healthy father. Now, my kids tell me I look like a superhero – it’s silly, but I love it!

Dream Client?

Michelle Obama. I would put her hair in a ponytail before a SoulCycle class!

Favorite Celeb client so far?

Hands down, Ethel Kennedy. I met Ethel when I was 24 years old. She was getting a manicure while watching me work one day. I had no idea who she was. The next day I was invited to the infamous Kennedy Compound to style her for an invent. She told me, many famous hairstylists had done her hair over the years, and I had the same passion and talent. That cosigning compliment gave me the confidence to pursue a career beyond Cape Cod.

Any plans for a haircare line in the future?

The market is very saturated at the moment. I love to partner with brands to work on product development and creative direction. I feel it’s essential to bring the “behind the chair perspective” to point people who don’t work in the field. It’s the difference between what stays successful and what fails. I’m very proud and honored to work with Platinum Seamless Hair Extention. I joined them over ten years ago. I have learned so much watching a small brand grow into the powerhouse it is today.

With your busy career, how do you balance being a full-time father to twins and being married?

It takes a village! Time management is also vital. I try my best to keep my need simple and get most things done when the kids are asleep.

Is social media a plus or negative for your brand?

Social media is only a positive for me. It’s a 24/7 online portfolio that can easily be updated. It lets a new client into your world and gives them the ability to see a curated representation of you.

What else can we expect from you in 2018?

2018 is going to be a fun year. I’m involved in a few projects coming out very soon. I have my hands in everything from hair care, to underwear. I’m family focused as my kids prepare for kindergarten. Wow! Time sure flies, I’m glad I feel like a superhero too!

5 Things Every Man Should Invest In:

Bright Smile
Crest Whitestrips work. A smile does not need to be perfect, but it should sparkle.

Classic Watch
Investing in a timepiece can last you over a decade. A watch is something you can wear every day and makes a statement.

Skincare Regimen
I’m obsessed with SkinMedica. After I wash my face, I use the TNS Serum and the HA5 Hydrator. Do a little research. Find a dermatologist to help you find a skincare line that’s best for you.

Dark Denim Jeans
The perfect fitted jean can be an investment. I usually buy two and tailor the lengths different for boots or sneakers. Paired your jeans with a t-shirt or a blazer.

Haircare
I don’t mean that $15 barbershop cut. Good haircare theses days starts from within. Keeping the fullness and shine you had in your early 20’s is critical. I love Ziering Medical ZPro and the Z82. The results are amazing! For more info check out ZieringMedical.com

Designer: Mass Luciano

Mass Luciano (MASS) has consistently remained stable over the last two years not allowing any distractions from their core vision. This Hong Kong-based brand is sure to make traction in the U.S. in no time.

Happy two year anniversary! How does that feel?

Thank you, it feels great! My partner and I started the brand as a way to collaborate creatively two years ago, and it’s very satisfying to see it grow each season.

What have you learned over the past two years?

We’ve learned how to listen and filter other people’s comments, suggestions and advise. Everybody has an opinion on what we should design and how we should do certain things, but at the end of the day, it needs to feel right and fit in with our vision. We love creating statement pieces that are casual without being dressed down. Each style has a visual impact and stands out with a graphic sensibility that’s structured and enhances the male form. Our customers keep asking for more, and we enjoy hearing from them.

Who is your client?

The MASS man is confident, bold and has a young attitude – he’s always effortlessly dressed and isn’t afraid to stand out.

Have you been a designer most of your life?

Yes – I studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles over 16 years ago and started work at Guess Jeans straight after. I’ve had the opportunity to work with companies in Los Angeles, Italy and Hong Kong designing womenswear, menswear and even for kids. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do.

Mass Collection 01 Mass Collection 02 Mass Collection 03 Mass Collection 04 Mass Collection 05 Mass Collection 06 Mass Collection 07 Mass Collection 08 Mass Collection 09

Where do you get inspiration when preparing for a collection?

From architecture and sports. I’m fascinated with structure and form, function and practicality… architecture and sports have that in common.

Where did you grow up?

I’m an Army brat, so my family moved a lot when I was a kid. My best memories were growing up in Fort Hood, Texas, and Nuremberg, Germany. We moved to Puerto Rico when I was 12 and I went to high school and college there before moving to Los Angeles. Now I live in Hong Kong and have called it home for the last five or 6 years.

Mass X Lane Crawford 01 Mass X Lane Crawford 03 Mass X Lane Crawford 04 Mass X Lane Crawford 05 Mass X Lane Crawford 06 Mass X Lane Crawford 09

Explain how your MASS for Lane Crawford collection came into existence.

We entered Lane Crawford’s ‘The Next New 2016’ competition and won best new menswear brand. Up until that moment, our styles were only available online on our website. We designed an exclusive collection for Lane Crawford allowing our customers to enjoy a luxury retail experience. It’s been a great opportunity, and we’ve just finished our second collection for them.

Being based in Hong Kong, do you find it challenging to tap into the U.S. market?

A considerable part of our business comes from the USA. We sell the collection online, and since online has no borders, geography hasn’t been a problem for us. Our customer base is very international. We have orders that come from all over the globe – from the USA, the UK, Spain, South Africa, Australia, Dubai, Australia, China. It is very international. Plus we provide free shipping on all orders and have a hassle free returns and exchange policy which makes shopping with us pretty easy.

Do you have plans to grow your retail distribution in the U.S.?

Yes! We’re currently stocked at Universal Body in Los Angeles and are looking to expand to New York and Miami in 2018.

What do you know now that you wish you knew two years ago?

First of all, say goodbye to a traditional Monday to Friday 9 to 5 work schedule. That’s the first thing to go out the window. Your personal and work life are continually overlapping as there is always something that needs to get done, or drawn up, or posted. It can be hard to separate the two, especially in the early days when you are setting up, but you need to make sure your private life does not suffer. Also, because we’re a small company, you have to be prepared to do things that usually would not be within your scope or remit and learn new things quickly.

Finally, and most importantly, don’t sweat the little things – remember that everything happens for a reason.

Abstract, collage artist Osiris Azar talks creative process and how he started his unique style of fine art. Raised by a single mom with 3 sisters, Osiris joined the USMC allowing him time to find his voice.

Q&A

Age: 29

Who or what inspires you? I started making collages before I picked up a camera. I took a photography class just to use as a spark plug and one of the photographers we were authorized to report on was ‘Frederick Sommer’. His subject matter wasn’t even close to my aesthetic but all I needed to see was “collage” in the description and there was no stopping me to continue making my art as dope as possible until I couldn’t be overlooked.

What’s your creative process? Once the subject is chosen. I go thru dozens, at least 100 magazines a page at a time selecting and removing subject matter. I cut out everything by hand, design the layout by hand. Then I take a picture and begin the post-production fine tuning until I feel like it’s ready.

How long does it take to produce one art piece? 1 – 4 weeks.

Where did you grow up? Benton Harbor, MI

Tell us a little about your upbringing? Raised by mom. Only boy. Three sisters. Started in performing arts schools, but was pulled out in 4th grade. Everyone around me tried to get me to buy into academia. Joined the USMC to buy me some time to figure out things. Didn’t have to fight in the war (ain’t God good). Used my whole GI Bill trying to find my calling.

Osiris Azar Osiris Azar

How long have you been creating your art? 6 years

Finish this sentence: I would call my creative expression _____________. (Abstract)

Dream client you would love to create a custom piece for? Donald Glover.

When you’re not creating, what do you do in your spare time? Create memes or TV. I’m addicted to both.

Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius

Favorite junk food(s): Fruit & Sour Punch Straws. Respectively.

Any shoutouts? H.O.D. C.E.O. Feminism.

Unapologetic fashion designer Vara Ayanna talks how being raised in Phoenix helped her change the narrative of being a super-lit fashion designer.

Q&A

Where are you based? I’m based in Los Angeles, CA and Phoenix, AZ (Born and raised Phxgirl 4 life.)

Tell us about your upbringing and how it influenced your style? My upbringing was very Afro-centric, art-based and Church-based. My Mother is an artist and my Father is a Laser Engineer – both of my parents were heavily involved in church when I was younger. I grew up very encouraged to express myself and have my own views, despite being so engrossed in the Black church culture because my mother is an artist. Also, my grandmother is a seamstress so I’ve been sewing, designing and making art since the age of about 4. My whole family is artistic.

I even have a little flower pot I handpainted when I was 5. It has ‘Four things you want to be when you grow up’. I put fashion designer on it (HAHA). As far as this influencing my style – I think it made me rebel a lot of my life. I naturally have a rebellious nature so I really want to give that, “I don’t give a f*** (for mom LOL) what you think about me” attitude about my clothing in my own way.

Growing up Black in Arizona definitely influenced my style. I think it really made me see the world in a different way. Being the only Black kid in your class until like 6th grade is super trippy. I lived on the same street all of my baby years so my siblings and I ( I’m the second oldest of 4 Kids. ) got a different view of the world I believe. My parents and grandparents are all from the east coast so that has added to the influence of being
Black, a woman from Arizona and have a whole family of artist all from New York and North Carolina.

One of my biggest influences is music. Music to me changes the world and how we see it. Music influences my clothing more than anything. I love every type of music even country (SOME LOL). My favorite band is My Chemical Romance. I can def sing any part of most any album (haha). I’m influenced by Hip-hop culture & Black culture, as far as favorite Hip-hop artist. I feel like I cannot comment on all of them but I definitely have a lot of artists that I respect, rep and love their music in the Industry. Hip-hop controls the world and everything is influenced by it. That should tell you how much I love anything trap, anything Hip-hop. I’m also influenced by food, traveling, cultures, art, and many other things. I love fashion. I love style and designing.

You’re a pretty dope Fashion Stylist. Why did you feel the need to start a fashion line?Starting my brand was something I’ve always wanted to do. Yes, I am a stylist but I loved designing and always have. I love designing masculine cut clothing and styling as well. I think me becoming a stylist came naturally after I began designing heavily at the age of 15. I remember just loving everything about fashion, playing with scenarios and looks. Organizing my shoots and shows myself helped me become a stylist as well.

Describe your brand in 3 words. Marauders in three words – Super-Lit, Flossy-4-life, Too-Dope LOL!

Who is your customer? My customer is definitely creative. I feel like creatives, artists, music heads; the people who are into how they look and don’t care about pushing the envelope on what they wear. My customer has always been the individuals and elite creative types.

Vara Ayana - MARAUDER$ World Wide Vara Ayana - MARAUDER$ World Wide Vara Ayana - MARAUDER$ World Wide

Dream celebrity you would love to see rocking MARAUDER$ World Wide? My dream Celebs to rock Marauders – Obama and Michelle; Bey & Jay, Kanye & Kim, Anna Wintour, Cardi B., Iris Apfel, Kendrick Lamar, Migos, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Stevie Wonder and more.

What do you know now that you wish you knew before you started your collection? I wish I knew how much money, time, and effort I would have had to put into my brands to get them exactly the way I wanted. Fashion is hard. Designing is hard. Being young and chasing your dreams while not knowing what’s going to happen next is hard. I know that it’s all worth it when you get to focus on your art and thrive in the fashion world. I’m very appreciative of the opportunities I have had the pleasure of having so far.

Pumpkin Pie or Sweet Potato Pie? PUMPKIN!

Vodka or Hennessy? Henny

Any shoutouts? Glory to God, honor to my family, my parents, grandparents and my sibs, Shout out to all friends and to everyone who has supported my efforts thus far.

H.E.R. Live Performance at the El REY Los Angeles

H.E.R.’s Los Angeles show on Saturday, October 25, 2017, at the El Rey Theater was the halfway point of her #LightsOnTour, and she made sure to put on a performance that was heartfelt and magical.

H.E.R., or “Having Everything Revealed”, has become an acronym synonymous with true modern day R&B. This is the stage name of a young gem of a songstress who has strategically created a platform with her identity shrouded in mystery; however, one thing that is no mystery at all is her ability to create beautifully orchestrated music.

THANK YOU LA! SANTA ANA TONIGHT #LIGHTSONTOUR

A post shared by H.E.R. (@hermusicofficial) on

The opening acts included soulful crooner, Arin Ray, and an artist who was at the height of “wave R&B”, Tiara Thomas. Both Arin and Tiara set a mood for the room that made the anticipation for H.E.R.’s performance so much more impactful. H.E.R. made sure to perform all of her fan-favorite tracks, which quite frankly, is almost her full catalog from both the H.E.R. Vol. 1 & 2 projects and her latest release, Volume 2, The B-Sides. Vocally, she dominated every note adding an amplified emotion to each track while the entire room sang along to her poetic lyrics. She performed her collaborative track, “Best Part” written and recorded with Daniel Caesar, with an emotion so powerful, it would make any listener want to fall in love.

A surprise performance from rising star, Khalid, was a special treat as both he and H.E.R. share a very similar fan base. He performed his hit track “Location”, which caused a wave of excitement amongst the crowd. To culminate her show, H.E.R. thanked her fans for selling out her tour, for appreciating R&B, and for being fans of the music first before anything else. H.E.R.’s notion alone can easily solidify her as a mainstay R&B act for years to come.

Jae Franklin

Jae Franklin’s much-anticipated second EP is dropping on December 8, 2017, and we’re looking forward to hearing what she has to say. She promises her new EP will be a riskier and revealing set of taboo conversations which has a different flow than her first EP ‘Cheers To Life’. ‘Skeletons’ is her kick-off single and the visual snippet debuted on her Instagram page.

Recently moving back to the States from Abu Dhabi, Jae is embarking on expanding her home base reach and reintroducing Americans to soulful R&B music. The songstress will mesmerize you with a subtle yet high-octave range. She is definitely the one-to-watch in 2018.

Jae was recently featured as one of our cover models for our 9-year Anniversary Issue Fashion Issue. Make sure you pre-order a copy of her new EP now on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.

Who is Jae Franklin? Jae Franklin is an artist. I’m a singer-songwriter. I’m a citizen of the world. I’m pragmatic with a wandering spirit.

Did you always want to be an artist? It may sound weird to some people, but I didn’t choose music. Music chose me. I realized early on that I was different because of the way I expressed myself through music. I feel like I’ve been an artist my entire life.

Your EP is finally dropping soon. Tell us about it and what do you expect people to take away from it? Sometimes society puts us in this box. We think certain topics are taboo. Every song on the Jae Franklin EP talk about the taboo stuff. I’m braver, riskier and more revealing. I think my supporters and listeners will appreciate my candor. I collaborated with my friend Vicente Espi. He produced every song. The sound is effortlessly soulful but we worked to capture my signature style – modern progressive soul.

What’s the story behind the lead single ‘Skeletons’? I wrote ‘Skeletons’ when I lived in Abu Dhabi. It’s one of the most honest songs I’ve ever written. It’s about the uncertainty of our future when our past comes back to haunt us.

We love the mood for the video [Skeletons]. Who was the director? Explain the concept. The music video was directed by Jakoyea Wright. We wanted a deep visual to support the mysterious mood of the song. The concept was centered around the angst over the unknown. The visual captures the emotions you feel when you realize that one past decision could lead to irreparable damage to your present situation.

The creative direction and flow of your Instagram images are visually intriguing. What was your motivation for creating it?  I’m a fan of visual art. I thought it would be cool to couple my love of visual art with my music and aesthetic. The flow of my Instagram page is simply a curated extension of me.

Do you prefer dinner during Thanksgiving or Christmas? I prefer Christmas. ‘Tis the season. I learned about the history of Thanksgiving a few years ago. I was appalled. I wish I had learned the truth when I was younger.

Tell us what to expect at your performance in Los Angeles this coming January? You can expect to hear new music from my new project, The Jae Franklin EP. I love creating special moments too. I’m hype because it will be my first solo performance in Los Angeles.

Any big plans you care to share in 2018? I’m rolling out visuals to support The Jae Franklin EP, hittin’ the road to tour the east and west coasts, and giving back to my community through the arts.

Nicola Gastaldi

3 Words that describe your work? Minimal, Geometric, Mind-bending

Dream brand collaboration(s)? Adidas, Nike, Puma

Where did you grow up? In a tiny town, Cremona, in the north of Italy. Beautiful and dreadful, you had to keep yourself busy in some way not to die of boredom.

A lot of movement and bold colors is used in your work. Why so? I always loved MC Escher and Zbigniew Rybczynski work. They are able to tell neverending stories creating endless illusions. (See video below)

Did you choose 3d media or did it choose you? 3d is a comfort zone now. I’ve been working with it for years. I tried to use perspectives in a different way, though, managing to subvert, in some of my loops, the expectations of the viewer. I also used 2d programs and in some loops, I’ve used just a marker on a piece of paper. ■

Mychael Knight

American Fashion Designer, and Project Runway alum, Mychael Knight has passed away. He was 39 years old. Mychael died at 7:25 am EST outside of Atlanta, GA on October 17, 2017, surrounded by his loving family and friends. His family asks that their privacy is respected during this time of grieving.

The Knight Family has selected OBVIOUS as their media source during their grievance for any inquiries. We’ve set up an email on behalf of Mychael Knight’s family: [email protected]. We will update you once more information is made available.

Official Statement for The Knight Family:

“We are still processing the untimely death of our son, brother, friend, and uncle. Mychael meant everything to us and we loved him dearly. He was generous and so full of life. This is how we choose to remember his legacy.” – The Knight Family

***UPDATE***
There’s a lot of inquiries and speculation about Mychael Knight’s cause of death and whether it was from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). We do not have his cause of death at this time. Mychael, however, publicly disclosed his battle with IBS via is Facebook Page on July 12, 2017. You can read his post in its entirety in his own voice here. We will provide more information once it becomes available.

I’m still in awe that I’ve created a post announcing his death. Mychael Knight was my friend, my brother, and a voice of reason everyone wants in their corner in the entertainment industry. He was passionate, outspoken, direct, kind, and unapologetic.

I met Mychael in Philly almost 10 years ago. We both were booked to speak on a fashion panel for Radio One. We instantly clicked and became friends. He was a true Southern Gentleman and had no problems telling you that he was from the South. No matter what situation or industry event we attended, he always remained himself. I admired that about him. He loved his family so much and others, it reflected. He was a big Momma’s Boy, his mother was one of his best friends.

When I lost my leg due to a rare form of bone cancer, Mychael helped me get my confidence back. I once complained how designers aren’t making clothes for people like me. Mychael’s immediate response was, “I got you! Give me a few days to sketch something for you.” I said okay cool. Later, I checked my email and there the sketches were. I cried. I saw the vision. That’s me, I said! What my friend did for me changed my attitude about how I looked and boosted my confidence beyond words.

Mychael Knight Sketches Mychael Knight Sketches Mychael Knight Sketches

When our schedules allowed us to hang out, we attend various red carpet and industry events together. He would come over to my apt and vice versa to break bread and discuss how we were going to take over LA (He made the best cocktails!!!). I remember the times when I would try to introduce my version of healthy food options to him and he would say, “I told you I have a taste for a burger Jerris… LOL!” That moment still cracks me up!

Mychael, as I cry typing this, I’m so glad I gave you your flowers while you were here and grateful for the time you spent here. You taught me to continue to stand up for myself in this business. I’m grateful we never allowed egos to compete in our friendship.

I scrolled through your Facebook page and saw the last quote you posted: “Life Tip: Do You.” I felt like you were speaking to me and everyone that you love. I will never forget you.

I love you my brotha from anotha Mother. Until we see each other again.

– Jerris :^)

JESSE MONTANA

Brian Stewart converses with Jesse Montana about his rise to stardom as an artist.

After arriving in Los Angeles to pursue a career in music, Jesse Montana found himself on both sides of the Hollywood’s red carpet–first as a celebrity stylist and then a reality TV star himself. If there was any indication that he was destined to be successful, it’s his work ethic–coupled with his passion and creativity–that fuels him as a stylist, actor, and singer.

Before Jesse began working as a celebrity stylist in Beverly Hills Meche Salon–styling clients like Paris Hilton, girl band GRL, Katie Stevens, Jessica Alba, Julia Lewis Dreyfus, Chrissy Teigen, and Scheana Maria Shay from BRAVO’s hit reality series Vanderpump Rules–he was chasing a music career.  After recognizing music was his passion at the age of 15–after learning how to play the guitar and writing his first song “Love Me Back”–Jesse was hooked“…I was scouted by a manager in high school and came out to California for a summer to be in a boyband called Diverse. After the group disbanded, I turned to social media [which] was an amazing launching point for me.”

Staying true to his gift, he covered songs that landed him in the company of various influential people helped him book his first gig and write his first song off of his EP, “Drunk On You” which was produced by Grammy award-winning producer, Infinity.  As they say, the rest is history, or as Jesse’s says “That was kind where everything started to blow up.”

Brian Stewart: What brought you to LA?

Jesse Montana: When I was younger, I always dreamed of living in dreamy California so that I could pursue music in Los Angeles. Along the way, I ended up going to school and getting a cosmetology license to become a stylist because I was thrown into a very high-end styling world when I was in Seattle that showed me the many ways I could make a life for myself if music never worked out. Thankfully enough, I landed the best job possible as a celebrity stylist at the world-renowned Meche Salon in Beverly Hills. I worked there a couple of days a week which gave me time throughout the week to tour and make music. I wouldn’t’ had it any other way. I felt so blessed.

BS: What’s the story behind your name “Jesse Montana”? is it that your real name?

JM: Currently I am California living, but I will forever be Montana born and raised. I got so lucky growing up in such a beautiful city like Missoula. It was small enough where you knew everybody, yet big, progressive and special enough to give me the humble and broad beginnings that paved the way for who I am today. I love the big sky country state so much. My name is an homage to my hometown love.

BS: You’re currently working at SUR, how did that happen?

JM: I do work at Sexy Unique Restaurant. LOL. My friends like to say I “wear many hats”. I actually started off doing Scheana Marie and Ariana Madix’s hair for the show Vanderpump Rules around Season 2 and became such close friends with them I ended up at all the filmings. Eventually, as I became closer with the whole cast hanging out all the time, the show approached me before the start of Season 4. I got cast, and the rest is history.

JESSE MONTANA

BS: From producing and starring in your web series #JESSEWOOD, which followed your everyday life adventures to photoshoots, recording studio sessions, live shows, and life in LA to starring on BRAVO’s hit TV show Vanderpump Rules, tell me about that journey?

JM: Honestly it’s all been a little bit of a whirlwind, but I will say if you don’t wake up in the morning and kick yourself in the ass to do it unless you have a manager, no one is going to do the work for you but yourself. Keeping myself busy with new projects on a continuous basis is something I love because it keeps me inspired.

When I first moved to LA, I was apprenticing for the biggest celebrity stylists in the city for almost five years. I had no time for myself, for music, sometimes barely to even eat throughout the day. When I finally graduated to being my own stylist, my mentor gave me two days on the salon floor. I went from working seven days a week straight to having five days to myself to finally work on things like #JESSEWOOD, and I finally got time to write and make music again. It took me a year, but I finished my first self-written EP JESSE MONTANA which was released on all digital platforms in March of this year. It’s been hard and tough at times to keep going, but I’m finally doing everything that I love, and I’m surrounded by the most creative and inspiring friends, family and colleagues.

BS: You’ve done a lot during your time here in LA, from celebrity styling and performing at LA Pride, to producing your first EP album and starring on a hit television show, if you could recount your most memorable experience in LA thus far, what would it be?

JM: I think performing on the main stage at LA Pride has to be the most amazing memory thus far. I shared the same stage with icons like Brandy, Erika Jayne, my boy Spencer Ludwig from Capital Cities, Aaron Carter and new breakout stars like Leon Else. It was such a blessing and honor for me to have my debut EP be heard on a stage in front of thousands of people celebrating the beautiful LGBTQ community. I hope I can continue to travel the world and share my music with people for as long as I’m able to.

BS: If you could describe yourself–as in your style–what would say it is?

JM: American Kissed California Vice

BS: What is your favorite clothing items to wear? Shoes? Accessories?

JM: I love statement rings like my turquoise ring, or my gold vintage French bulldog pinky ring my friend Lala gave me. A good patterned silk shirt is the way to my heart these days as is a pair of classic Adidas Stan Smith’s, Van’s or suede Chelsea boots.

BS: Where is your favorite place to visit?

JM: Sometimes when I need to get away and meditate, I hike The Wisdom Tree trail alone and sit at the top by the Buddha for hours watching the sky as the sun sets in the sky. It’s one of the most incredible and powerful places in LA for me.

BS: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go, and why?

JM: Honestly get me on a plane, and I’m game to go anywhere. I love to travel and love adventure so whether I’ve been there or not, I’ll Google my way into an itinerary for a day full of fun and discovery in new places. Still haven’t been to Italy, Greece or London yet–trying to make that happen ASAP.

JESSE MONTANA

BS: Aside from tequila, buffalo wings, and good music, what do you love?

JM: I tend to have a weak spot for puppies, Jameson, video games and Sour Patch Kids as well.

BS: You recently had a birthday, what did you do to celebrate?

JM: We drank like kings & queens and ate like kids. One of the best birthdays in ages. I’m so lucky to be surrounded by the people I have in my life right now; it was really just a celebration for us all. We spent the day under the sun in a cabana at the Highlight Room at The Dream Hotel in Hollywood, had my favorite Berry Cake from Sweet Lady Jane, went to dinner at TAO and finished off at Skybar’s Wicked Paradise for a little disco before heading to Nightingale for a big birthday surprise. Thank you to every beautiful face that was there–YGMSB.

BS: Can you describe a day in the life of Jesse Montana?

JM: [I] wake up and head to the gym for fast cardio and a workout; eat breakfast; post/edit and interact on social media; write or edit my music; send some emails; eat lunch; style or cut some hair; head to SUR for a night shift and finish off with a nightcap in the neighborhood with my friends and lover before bed. If it’s a lucky day, I get to perform on stage somewhere in the day.

BS: What advice would you give aspiring artist/entrepreneurs?

JM: For artists, never give up, never stop writing, never stop trying, never stop making music, never stop believing, and take rejections and negativity as fuel to push harder.

If you are trying to run your own business or creative empire, [and] don’t have a manager, you are your own boss. GTFU, drink your coffee, make a plan and stick to it as best as you can. You have to do the work to see the success. Reward yourself with those much needed days of celebration or rest because it makes it all worth it in the end. You have to enjoy the ride above all.

Interview

You have come a long way. How did you get started in the music business?

I started in the music business singing with my sister, performing for label execs in Houston and around the country. Those opportunities fell through. As a solo artist, I released my two EPs, Universal Language: Prelude 1 and Universal Language: Prelude 2. I also released two more EPs and began traveling and touring with other well-known artists, experiencing life on the road as a working artist.

Originally, you were a duo with your sister, what made you go solo?

I wanted to explore my own voice. I also wanted to grow personally and professionally.

Being a native of Houston, how did the recent natural disaster affect you?

That was my childhood home. It’s still a big part of me. Many of my friends and family were affected in different ways. I was immediately compelled to donate and share information with others about how to help Houstonians.

If you could collaborate with 3 recording artist, who would it be and why?

Maxwell. He’s set the blueprint for emerging artists to create long-term success. Most recently, he showed me love after he heard my remix of his song, Lake by the Ocean. I feel that’s a step in the right direction.

Amel Larrieux. She’s an artist of substance also seems accessible although she’s been in the industry for decades.

Angelique Kidjo. She’s a legend and modern-day chameleon. Oh, the lessons I will learn from her about life, music, humanitarianism, and empowerment one day.

Fried chicken or baked chicken?

Tofu. How ‘bout that?

How do you balance your career and marriage?

I never fake the funk. Neither does my husband. If we’re apart for an extended amount of time, we make sure we communicate on a schedule that works for us.

What do you love about being married?

Marriage is an extension of our friendship.

Do you want children one day?

Yes, I do.

What do you know now that you wished you knew when you started?

I wish I had known that traditional marketing wouldn’t be as valuable as digital marketing.

Favorite genre of music?

Soul music, especially soul music created around the late 70s.

Tell us about your latest single?

Love is Not Hard has a clear message. It’s about loving you. It’s about loving people who rub you the wrong way. They need love too since they don’t understand how their actions hurt other people. Love is Not Hard was digitally released in September. There’s live, soulful music throughout the song.

Love is Not Hard was produced and mixed by David Kennedy, who most recently mixed the latest A Tribe Called Quest album We Got it From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. The artwork was created by Nick Liefhebber.

Do you plan to drop a full album, EP or mixtape?

The Jae Franklin EP drops in November.

What do you feel is hindering you from getting your ‘big break’?

With the right amount of effort and quality content, I think my journey will blossom just as it should. I’ve learned that inconsistency versus consistency plays a big part. Digital marketing and branding are huge.

How do you feel about the current state of music?

I feel that there is space for everyone. There is an audience for everyone. The current state of music is starting conversations about politics and good versus evil. It’s sparking movements and building communities. It’s empowering people. It’s bridging the gap between generations. More artists are creating content with important messages. The current state of music is important and groundbreaking.

Is the music industry fair to the

independent artist?

Life isn’t fair. I wouldn’t expect the music industry to be any different. There’s music then there’s the industry. It’s good to have an understanding of both. Indie artists have to stay in the game. We have to be well-rounded. I don’t have a big machine behind me yet. I have to create content consistently. I have to wear a lot of hats, which takes more time to execute. From digital strategy to marketing to music, I have to make sure my music is created and released. Ultimately, I’m determined to reach music lovers, executives, brands, and potential corporate sponsors.

Where can we see you perform live in the future?

I will be performing in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York very soon. Check my website for more details. http://www.voroso.co.

Favorite quote from ‘you’?

A mistake on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

Romper or Dress?

Depends on the day.

Any regrets?

Nope. None at all.

Any shoutouts?

Big shoutout my husband, parents, and sister. Another shout out my supporters, my creative peers, and out to music. Last shout out to the Universe. I see you (Universe) shifting things in my direction.

Naomi Pitcairn - Pershing Square

Social Activist, Naomi Pitcairn is commissioned by The Los Angeles Department of Recreation & Parks to creative 60′ x 40′ massive artworks celebrating different bands as diverse as LA’s punk rock X to roots rock The Wallflowers. All six Pershing Square Downtown Stage Summer Concerts will take place Saturday nights, starting at 8 pm; located at 532 S. Olive St. in the heart of downtown Los Angeles.

Our Editor in Chief, Jerris Madison has been asked to document the creative process. “Watching Naomi and her team created this artwork brings a smile to my heart. I’ve seen creations like this on social media and in magazines but never in person. I’m so grateful to be apart of the process in support of Naomi Pitcairn. She is one of the most dedicated artists I’ve met to date.” Throughout the process, LA locals helped to create the first art piece.

You can witness each piece every weekend over the next 6 weeks: July 15th, 22nd, 29th & August 5th, 12th & 19th, 2017 and check out the list of performers for the concert series here.

CONCERT SERIES

For this commission, she’s building on her grad school study of design and technology where she created code to visualize the symmetries that bring patterns to life. “I’m using a scaling technique of grid-ing off a drawing into smaller sections to make it easy to extrapolate the bigger version. But here in the Pershing Square, there are pavers in a basket weave pattern, so I just work with that existing matrix. This location gives me the opportunity to use stencils and mess with it. We have a lot of fun transforming the street under our feet into temporary art, so come see each one before it gets power washed away.”

Check out more of Naomi Pitcairn’s work at www.NaomiPitcairn.com.

Awakening: Marcc Rose http://obviousmag.com/awakening-marcc-rose/ Wed, 10 May 2017 01:24:41 +0000 http://obviousmag.com/?p=3193 Actor Marcc Rose discusses his unique perspective on life, and his feelings towards the challenging task of depicting one of the greatest rappers of all time, Tupac Shakur.

Preparation will ALWAYS meet opportunity! If you’re not prepared, your chance can pass you by. I want to always be ready for mine!
– Marcc Rose

Eased by the cool breeze of Hermosa Beach, CA, the waves create a relaxed setting for Actor Marcc Rose to open up about pressures both on and off the set. The 24-year-old Brooklyn Native is preparing to take on his biggest role yet! Portraying Iconic Hip-Hop Legend, Tupac Shakur, in USA Network’s upcoming series ‘Unsolved: The Murders of Biggie & Tupac’. And with all the anticipation surrounding the role, Marcc admits there’s a huge responsibility in playing such a legendary figure.

“I got to get this right! This is ‘Pac’ we’re talking about.” he enthusiastically states. “Capturing his truth is important to me. I want to show that he not only was the rapper we grew to love. He also was a thinker. A leader. That’s the voice I want to represent.”

AWAKENING: MARCC ROSE AWAKENING: MARCC ROSE

The series is set to premiere later this year, creating a huge buzz followed by its recent pilot. Shot and Executive Produced by renowned director, Anthony Hemmingway, alongside acclaimed writer, Kyle Long. ‘Unsolved’ is also joined by an all-star cast of today’s biggest Hollywood names. And is set to be one of the networks’ biggest hits, a true breakout! And even with all the recent success, Marcc continues to stay humble through the whole process. Smiling as he talks about the excitement leading up to the premiere, “It’s surreal at times,” he states. It all is happening so fast but I’m grateful and excited to get this opportunity. BLESSED really! It makes me realize that dreams really do come true!”

“Dreams Come True” can be a factual statement for this self-proclaimed, “Dreamer.”  Because in truth, he made them happen. A true visionary, on his own he manifested his whole career into existence. It was only a short 3 years ago he embarked on his journey as an actor. Through finding acting classes, partner readings, and tireless hours of studying, he dedicated himself to the craft. And when the opportunity came for him to have his first role portraying Tupac in the 2014 Box Hit Hit, ‘Straight Outta Compton’, he was more than ready for his moment. Something he’s prepared for his whole life.

“Preparation will ALWAYS meet opportunity! If you’re not prepared, your chance can pass you by. I want to always be ready for mine!” Rose stated.

AWAKENING: MARCC ROSE

And with that statement, it’s no surprise when asked to give 3 words that best describe himself, he stated: “Driven. Creative. Aspirational.” Strong, powerful meanings all suited for such a goal-oriented young man. It’s those same goals and dreams that drove Marcc as a young boy. Growing up in what is known as New York’s ‘Concrete Jungle’, he admits that Brooklyn gave him the hunger to achieve greater. And he always envisioned more. More opportunity, more success. A belief of a better life and the tenacity to go get it. And, a vision he passionately shares with his Grandmother, a native of Trinidad who came to the United States alone over 50 years ago in hopes of a better future for herself and future generations.

“What I admire most is the courage it took.” Smiling, he nods and adds. “Take that leap! We were raised on the belief that everything is possible and that you can accomplish anything! I plan to do just that.”

It’s no denying he can do just that! The future truly looks bright for this up-and-coming talent as he gets ready for this new chapter in life. Just like all the other great leaders before him, Marcc wants to inspire people young African-American males to: “Chase your dreams and follow your heart!” and not allowing hardships or stereotypes to hold back their potential. He emphasizes on the fact to live each day to its’ fullest potential! To express yourself through your own creation, owning no one. Enjoying and living life without limitations. That’s the legacy he wishes to leave.

“I’m just like you, a believer! Through faith, I’ve been able to follow my dreams. And I want to encourage everyone that you can do the same. Take risks! Go after what it is you want and what makes you happy. Live man!” he charismatically ends.

Catch Marcc Rose and the talented cast of ‘Unsolved: The Murders of Biggie & Tupac’ coming soon to television screens.

The tech-enabled bespoke essentials brand opens LA Flagship on March 21, 2017

Sene, Opens First Retail Store and Launches Home Fitting Service The tech-enabled bespoke essentials brand, opens LA Flagship on March 21, 2017 LOS ANGELES (March 1, 2017)–Sene, the tech-enabled menswear brand offering modern bespoke essentials with minimal impact on the environment, is opening their Los Angeles flagship store in the creative shopping district, La Brea. The store includes a personalized styling session, fittings, drink service for customers, and bi-monthly events.

“Instead of replicating the typical retail experience, we felt there was an opportunity to break away and offer a hero customer experience, said CEO Ray Li. “Because of the on-demand nature of our products, we’ve created a service enabling a personal and emotional relationship with customers where they can feel comfortable trying out new styles, cuts, colors, getting their exact measurements taken, then going home and ordering online with ease.”

Starting May 2017 customers will be invited to join Sene for their bi-monthly events, ranging from panel discussions, whiskey, bourbon, and coffee tastings, exhibits, etc. The idea is to build a cultural hub for like-minded folks.

Sene, partnered with Google’s retail design lead, Warit Top Tulyathom on the store design. Primary inspiration stemmed from the use of scale and shapes in the Blackness in Abstraction exhibit at Pace Gallery in New York City and modern architecture in Tokyo.

Once entering the store located at 149 S. La Brea Ave, guests will be greeted by a visually striking photo installation in the front, faux concrete walls giving a nod to the brutalist Scandinavian aesthetic, softened with tufted Maharam fabric, and wall fixtures that reference the Japanese design of Issey Miyake, where the clothes themselves blend into the design of the store. In the back of the store will be fitting rooms and backlit swivel door that leads to an exposed brick creative studio, which will serve as an office and space for photo shoots.

Sene will celebrate the opening of their LA flagship with a party on Tuesday, March 21st from 7pm-10pm. Media, style bloggers, and friends will come together to get a sneak peek of the store before it opens to the public on March 22nd. Guests will be treated to libations from Glenfiddich and music by DJ Sleeper.

The store will be open M-F 11:00am – 7:00pm, Sat 10:00am – 7pm, and Sun 12pm-5pm. To schedule your appointment and personal fitting session please email [email protected], call 1.844.439.7363 or visit www.senestudio.com/pages/letsmeet.

Spotlight: Cavier Coleman http://obviousmag.com/spotlight-cavier-coleman/ Wed, 15 Mar 2017 18:23:52 +0000 http://obviousmag.com/?p=2856 Cover model alum, Cavier Coleman embarks on a vivid and artistic painting career that took years to create. Inspired by the likes of Basquiat and Picasso, he uses life experiences to draw inspiration.

Do you still model? Yes. Currently, in the process of seeking new representation. I cannot say who is in the running yet. 😉

How did you become a painter? Honestly, I became interested in painting when I was younger. I just never followed through until I became older and free.

Dead or Alive, what painters or artist inspire you? Why? I would have to say, Pablo Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Roy Lichtenstein. Their work speaks volume from abstraction, color, truth and being pure geniuses. All of them had their own time and lane. I’m focusing on creating my own path.

How long does it take for you to produce an art piece? That can vary from painting to painting. Some pieces can take up to 6 months depending on medium or mental evolution and some pieces can take up to 2 weeks or even 2 days. It’s about what I’m trying to convey or make people feel in that moment.

CAVIER COLEMAN ART CAVIER COLEMAN ART CAVIER COLEMAN ART CAVIER COLEMAN ART CAVIER COLEMAN ART CAVIER COLEMAN ART

Do you find it challenging for people to see your work globally? Yes. It was very hard in the beginning. No one knew who I was so it was hard to get my paintings on the wall but I stuck with it, kept my persistence in elevating my creativity. Eventually, people started responding.

Do you create paintings for private clients? Yes, I do. I’ve painted murals, private collections for homes and restaurants.

Does your work reflect personal trials and tribulations? Yes. That plays a huge part. I’m a very emotional person so with my art I tend to let whatever I feel go with a sense of purity but on a deeper understanding of life. I want to give people a brighter perspective yet truthful reality through my vision of painting.

What’s your favorite piece? Why? I would have to say my favorite piece would have to be ‘Famine’. I made this painting back in 2013. This painting, in particular, reflected my travels to Africa bringing light to their poverty and corrupted systems. I wanted to bring light to the darker side which I felt like I did successfully.

Any shout outs? I would honestly like to thank OBVIOUS Magazine for believing in me and helping me build a modeling, photography, and now an art media platform for over the past 6 years. It has been one amazing ride. ■
