STYLE INFLUENCER: CANDY WASHINGTON http://obviousmag.com/style-influencer-candy-washington/ Wed, 17 May 2017 21:43:14 +0000 http://obviousmag.com/?p=3600 Influential Blogger/Clothing Designer, Candy Washington uses her humility and drive to inspire people around the world along through her journey.

There are a lot of Influencers popping up on social media. What separates you from them?

I think that’s the beauty of social media. It provides a platform for all people to share their content, voice, and a piece of their lives with the world. With that being said, I agree, there are a ton of influencers currently saturating the market and it’s more important now than ever to be your authentic self on your social media channels.

What sets me apart from some of the other influencers, is that I treat every brand campaign, tweet, Instagram post, video, etc., as if I’m talking to my best friend. I don’t view them as “followers.” I view them as my best friends that I’m sharing my life and I hope that I’m able to add value to their lives through the stories that I tell.

Whether it’s a teenager suffering from acne and is able to get clear skin based on a skincare campaign that I did or a small business owner scared to take the leap to create their own brand but is inspired by personal stories of perseverance and never giving up, I always want to make sure that my posts are meaningful and adding value to others. Another thing that sets me apart is that although I love sharing my experiences, I never take myself too seriously. For example, I started an #ImBasic series on social media where I poke fun at my basic(ness) which includes my love for Starbucks, avocado toast, Unicorns, Organic acai berry gluten-free protein smoothies, and being #blessed.

Being able to laugh at myself is one of the biggest things that makes me different from a ton of influencers out there. I truly believe that the purpose of social media is to inspire, connect, and uplift.

How did you get started?

After graduating from Georgetown, I moved to New York City and became a PR Intern for Louis Vuitton. I quickly learned the ropes and how to navigate the fashion scene. I started my blog as a hobby but as it grew in popularity, I realized that I could turn it into a full-time job. But that meant investing it in full-time. I would work during the day and then focus on my blog at night and over the weekends.

After working on my blog, saving up a healthy nest egg, freelance writing for other sites, and building up my following on social media, I was in a position to quit my day job and move to L.A. The moment that I decided to be a full-time blogger and social media influencer, I created to plan and timeline in order to make that happen.

It’s been over two years since I made the leap and I’ve expanded into on-camera hosting as a host for Disney Style and into acting as well. I’ve also started a fashion line, 1214 by Candy Washington.

What influences your creative process?

My authentic life and my personal experiences are the two main factors that influence my creative process. When I feel off-balanced, it’s hard for me to get into my flow when it comes to writing, taking photos, designing, and creating characters.

I try to meditate every day and follow a healthy diet with tons of water because I want to be a clear and grounded as possible in my daily life so I’m in a place to find inspiration and be inspiring.

Practicing gratitude and humility also opens me up creatively. Whenever I feel discouraged or overwhelmed, I just get very still and show appreciation for the small things in life. I realize how abundance is all around me and there’s never a true reason to be unhappy. Once I unlock gratitude, creativity flows from me.

This exercise has been super important to me as I’m currently working on my most challenging project to date. More to come on that!

Coachella or SXSW?

Both! They are both such epic experiences, I could never pick just one. But I will say this, I go to Coachella for the fashion and SXSW for the music.

Dream brand collaboration?

Chanel. Since I was a little girl, it’s been a dream of my mine to be the face of Chanel. It’s one of the most iconic fashion houses in the world. Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel are legends. I know it will happen one day.

Press Release

(NEW YORK, February 11, 2017) This morning, dreams took flight as Laurence & Chico presented their Fall / Winter 2017 CollectionLC888<—>LC889, at Pier 59 Studios.

The collection is comprised of 18 looks that include a combination of oversized velvet pieces and more tailored, intricate looks. Using Laurence’s vibrant illustrations, Chico designed the collection with pillows, cushions, and comfort in mind. Pearls in various sizes were used as embellishments on jacquards and puffed up velvets, in addition to functioning as seams, connecting different together materials to create a new fabrication. Using the brand’s signature prints and fabric manipulation, the duo created a captivating feeling of being up in the air: dreamy, euphoric and ethereal.

Model’s were accessorized with oversized square wigs, custom gloves + shoes and phones cases from their collaboration with Candies. Each look was finished with a futuristic makeup look by Beautyblender, which supplied its own Pro team for the first time this season.

The presentation featured model Shaun Ross (Laurence & Chico is the only show he is walking in this season) and music by DJ May Kwok. Joining in the celebration were notables that included Miss J. AlexanderLarsen ThompsonVienna Skye, Louisa Warwick, Mery RacauchiCailli + Sam Beckerman and more.

Inspired by whimsical dreams of air travel, the collection came to life in a loop of sketching and dozing during flights back and forth from Laurence Li and Chico Wang’s hometown, Vancouver, and New York City. “In the dream, we were wrapped by one giant soft pillow while marshmallow-clouds passed by the plane window one by one. The pillow was so comfy and warm. Within these clouds, there were sleepy, laid back, unusual creatures, along with plane-looking creatures that fuels by farting. This is Airline LC888<—>LC889. The collection aims to bring this dream to all of you.” – Chico Wang, Creative Director.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

KIMMY.J’s FW/17 collection titled, “Dumpster Disposal Squad” is inspired by garbage collectors who pick up trash from door to door. The title uses Dumpster, to reference landfills, and Disposal Squads, to reference the collectors, personifying them as superheroes. The collection uses fun, energetic color palettes reminiscent of plastic, metal, and vinyl, juxtaposed against achromatic colors you find in refuse. Silhouettes include reinterpreted uniform shapes and feature details found in public goods.

Designer Heejin Kim majored in integrated design in Yonsei University. Originally expressing her creativity through furniture design, Kim felt her artistic imagination was stifled, and 2013 launched KIMMY.J Kim aims to develop a witty collection for urban lifestyle using her structural design aesthetic. Greedilous F/W 2017 Collection welcomes a dark, feminine, casual silhouette for their latest collection. The collection has the makings of a great James Bond movie. Dark tones with pops of color, superb silhouettes and mystery.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

The GREEDILOUS F/W17 collection references a 1930’s Salvador Dali painting “The Persistence of Memory,” through the use abstract objects and rhythmic patterns. Such surrealist nods to inference and nuanced awareness reminded the designer, Younhee Park, of the investigative works of Sherlock Holmes; Using the movies’ background history and mood, she completed her collection using classic checked prints and Greedilous’s unique style, perfecting the collection with a feminine, casual silhouette.

Since 2009, designer Younhee Park has captured the authenticity of haute couture but with an eye on sustainability. Describing the look as ‘futuristic modernity’, Park creates a feminine look with masculine undertones that manages to be both classic and directional. GREEDILOUS has grown into a global brand loved by celebrities and influencers worldwide. The brand has participated in Paris’s Who’s Next, Seoul’s Generation Next and NYC’s Capsule and Coterie tradeshows. Most notably, the designer was nominated for the 2014/2015 International Woolmark Prize.

Deveaux presents a clean, minimalist approach for their Fall/Winter 2017 Collection spearheaded by designers Matt Breen, Patrick Doss and Andrea Tsao. Their collection embodies men and women on the go who need to go from work to dinner at a short moment’s notice.

Press Release

Deveaux Unveils Fall / Winter 2017 Collection

New York, NY, February 1st, 2017 – New York-based luxury menswear label, Deveaux is pleased to unveil the brand’s Fall / Winter 2017 collection, set to make its debut on the runway for CFDA’s NYFW: Men’s at Cadillac House on February 1st, 2017. Taking inspiration from the untouched, raw beauty of Iceland, designers Matt Breen, Patrick Doss and Andrea Tsao have put forth a highly curated offering of minimally luxe wardrobe staples that show a seamless evolution from seasons past.

The natural formations and elements of a landscape formed long ago lead the design vision for Deveaux this season. Material interest plays a central role in the collection as seen in supple textures used throughout the offering, like a heavy silk akin to the pebbles of the black sand beaches and dyed Italian calf suede that resembles Iceland’s dusty brown rock formations. Deveaux also used a luxe shearling with a custom matte finish to mirror the deep black of the night sky. Enamored with the peppered ash of Iceland’s volcanic history, the design team dyed tube-knitted cashmere and handknit it into a beautiful heavy cardigan, that serves one of the standout pieces in the collection.

The Fall / Winter 2017 color palette stays true to Deveaux’s tonal aesthetic with rich, earthy hues laying the foundation for this season’s styles. While Iceland’s natural tones lie at the core of the collection, artist Mark Rothko’s works serve as the inspiration for how they interact on each piece. The seemingly random interaction of diverse colors in Rothko’s works is applied to the tonal interaction of Deveaux’s newest knits and shirting, which make a bold statement against the minimal backdrop of the full offering.

Continuing the brand’s exploration of proportion play, Deveaux utilizes loose, fluid, and in some cases oversized, silhouettes to drive the direction for the season.

“This collection marks an important time in the evolution of Deveaux– one where the identity of our brand has begun to take form. As we delve deeper into sourcing new materials and textures and silhouettes, our commitment to creating a new class of luxury menswear staples remains intact,” says Designer Andrea Tsao.

Fall / Winter 2017 also introduces Deveaux’s first foray into footwear with the introduction of the brand’s first collaboration with Viberg (www.Viberg.com), an iconic footwear manufacturer known for creating some of the world’s best boots and casual footwear since 1931. The collaboration will put forth 3 shapes including a Zip Boot, a Chelsea Boot and a Slip-On (all in Black Kangaroo, Brown Chromexcel, and Brown Calf Suede, with the addition of Over-Dyed Black Calf available for the Slip On).

Kinross Cashmere F/W 2017 relaunches under the creative direction of Design Director, Christian Arkins bringing a lifestyle-driven approach to their fall collection. The brand aesthetic represents the classic man who loves a great fit, comfort and superb quality that exudes their personal style.

Press Release

Kinross Cashmere Introduces Expanded Menswear Offering for Autumn / Winter 2017
Luxury Knitwear Label Re-Launches Menswear Collection with the Addition of Made in America and Made in Italy Categories

New York, NY, February 2017 – Kinross Cashmere is pleased to unveil the new look of its menswear collection for Autumn / Winter 2017, featuring fresh, modern design, and the addition of new product categories including Made in America shirting, ties and scarves as well as Made in Italy cashmere statement ties. An evolution from the brand’s classic core collection, Autumn/ Winter 2017 welcomes the largest menswear offering from Kinross Cashmere to-date; designed for the cosmopolitan man who appreciates impeccably crafted garments that are truly built to last.

Kinross Cashmere’s Autumn / Winter 2017 collection effortlessly bridges the gap between timeless and current, under the lead of Kinross Cashmere’s new Menswear Design Director, Christian Arkins, a fashion industry veteran who has spent 20+ years designing for the likes of Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Original Penguin and McGregor. By pairing an expanded offering of lifestyle driven knitwear in new shapes and yarns with more fashion forward statement pieces like chunky knit blazers and waistcoats, the latest collection emerges as the perfect comprehensive solution for a modern man’s daily wardrobe.

Inspired by the cosmopolitan epicenters of the world like London and New York as well as the rugged, rich terrains of the countryside, the design team at Kinross Cashmere created a color palette that is minimal yet rich. Neutral tones, shades of blue and tonal greys/blacks pave the foundation for the collection, while pops of bright orange, bottle green, deep burgundy and electric blue make a bold statement throughout. Choosing to focus his attention on tonality, Arkins introduced special washes, unique prints and new dye techniques to the garment production process that captivate the eye and celebrate the perfect imperfections of color set atop supple textures.

While the collection centers on what Kinross has become best known for over the years – knitwear – this season introduces new luxury accents into the offering such as US-made button-down shirting, crafted using European fabrics including Italian Albini prints; 100% cashmere woven ties, and scarves handmade in the US using American fabric; as well as 100% cashmere knit ties, handcrafted in Italy.  These new categories round out the Kinross offering, providing a man with everything he needs from the waist up as the cool of autumn sets in.

“Our goal this season was to build a really strong base from which we can expand in the future,” says Christian Arkins. “We want to continue to celebrate our iconic heritage in all aspects of design, always focusing on creating the best quality garments possible while also adding a unique touch to the finished products that bring the collection into the modern age.”

The Kinross Cashmere Autumn / Winter 2017 collection ranges in price from $90 – $700 USD and is available at over 450 retailers nationwide including Mitchell Stores (shop.mitchellstores.com), Mark Berman & Sons (www.bermanbasics.com) and Oak Hall (www.oakhall.com).

Once upon a time, it seemed Men’s clothing was limited to dark colors such as black, blue, brown, gray and any other boring colors. Taking full control of what they wear, men becoming very selective about how they wear suits, jackets, shirts, and pants that are designed to fit their male physique.

CHAPTER presents their Autumn/Winter 2017 Campaign Lookbook debuting in Paris at Galerie Paris-Beijing – January 19th – 24th and in New York at PBLC TRDE Showroom – January 23rd – February 2nd. The collection represents their core brand consistency of clean lines and minimalism.

about

Chapter’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection is inspired by human intuition— the state of being mindful and present. These concepts prompt introspection and a reassessment of priority, allowing one to be meaningfully engaged.

CONVERSION focuses on the elements that piqued our initial interest in design: effortless virility, hand-sewn garments of our adolescence, lived-in plaids, and stripes, the simplicity of oversized outerwear and the overall comfort of relaxed silhouettes. The fabrics used are influenced by a collection of yarn-dyed and printed patterns consisting of stripes and plaids with the incorporation of seasonal colorways [oxblood and dark plum]. Subtle embellishments seen throughout the collection pay homage to minimalist art and music.
