Photographer Steve Gonzalez Talks Creative Approach, Inspiration

Steve Gonzalez is a cinematic storyteller-type photographer who helps other content creators curate their voices through images and video. We previously interviewed Steve Gonzalez about his personal style. Now, we discuss his creative process.

I don’t have a photographic style. I shoot what catches my eye and what inspires me most of the time. I tend to document with my photography and always try to tell a story with it.

Steve Gonzalez Interview

What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?

You will never stop learning this craft, and that improvement only comes with time and experience.

What gear do you use to produce your imagery?

It depends. I use point and shoot, film, and my professional camera for social media. I use my 5D Mark IV for studio and professional work, but I’m always in the market for something to facilitate my work.

Which lens is your favorite? Why?

HMMMM, That’s a tricky question. It’s like asking me which pair of shoes are my favorite, LOL! It depends if I’m doing studio, commercial work, editorial, or street style. I will say that I love a good zoom lens and its flexibility.

Do you take any essential items other than a camera and lens when you go out to shoot?

I love a good tote bag that can hold most of my equipment with ease, a good pair of comfortable shoes, even though that isn’t always the case. I also always have a timepiece/watch with me and a magazine or newspaper, just in case the shoot’s mood asks for one. I love a good prop for a shoot!

Why did you choose to pursue a career as a photographer?

I didn’t choose it. It presented itself to me.

What is the most challenging part of being a photographer for you?

Because my job requires me to capture moments, I feel I can’t ever stop myself from working. I always regret not taking a camera everywhere I go.

How would you describe your photographic style?

I don’t have a photographic style. I shoot what catches my eye and what inspires me most of the time. I tend to document with my photography and always try to tell a story with it.

What photo-editing program do you use?

The software I prefer to use the most is Lightroom Classic, Lightroom, and Photoshop.

What are some of your favorite images you’ve created?

I guess shooting individuals on candid moments. Most of those shots have not ever been shown on my social media or website. It’s mostly when I was abroad in Italy and its real people, living life, enjoying restaurants, coffee, etc.

Whose work has influenced you most?

Hmmm, funny, I tend to study every field I’m interested in. I try to really educate and inform myself as much as possible. However, with photography, I don’t really know much about it and its history. There are so many to mention whose work I am inspired by; however, I feel like my work is very different from most.

One name I’ll give you is Jeremy Mitchell (@xxmithc). He tends to be able to marry social media photography with editorial while staying true to his craft.
