Have 'A Seat At the Table' with Podcaster, Gail Hurst

Gail Hurst - A Seat at the Table Podcast

Podcaster, Gail Hurst started her podcast, A Seat at the Table, to bring more conversations about mental health, self-care, and conscious mindfulness.

“Don’t do it to be a star; it won’t work.”

– Gail Hurst

What made you want to get into podcasting?

It was a natural progression, as I had done a brief stint on college radio. I went on to do an Internet radio show in Philadelphia, which eventually led to me being part of an ensemble podcast.

Why did you choose to call your podcast, “A Seat at the Table”?

I had just lost my job. I joined two guys on a podcast, and they went on to do their show (without me). I became discouraged because I didn’t think I could do a show on my own. I knew I couldn’t do a show like I had done in the past (no ensemble). But I knew I could set my own table, so to speak.

Who are some of your influences?

God. Myself. Oprah.

What’s the biggest misconception you think people have about podcasts?

That because you can speak; it will be easy to orchestrate a compelling podcast.

If you could have anyone on your show, who would it be and why?

Solange – mostly because I know it would be a thoughtful and intentional conversation. Solange sells her art, not her personal life.

Towards the end of your shows, you do something called, “Setting the Table” that focuses on self-care and mental health. What made you want to include the topic of mental health into your show?

Mental health is still taboo in our (humans in general) community. I feel if we consciously address mental health, we can be more cognizant of when an episode is coming on. Practicing mindfulness can only serve to enhance our human experience.

What do you think your show has that other podcast lack?

ME, that’s all. I’m God’s exclusive release.

Not too long ago, you did a show about people’s Top 5 rappers. Who are your Top 5?

In no particular order:

  • Notorious BIG
  • Lil Kim/ Foxy Brown (tie)
  • Jay Z
  • Kanye West
  • NWA

What is it that you hope people take away from your shows after listening to them?

Intention is the root of all things, and conscious mindfulness is a pathway to happiness.

What advice would you give someone starting their own podcast?

Don’t do it to be a star; it won’t work. LOL!
