Not many people have ยฃ30k spare for a new kitchen, and honestly, most of the time you don’t need it. What actually makes a kitchen feel expensive has surprisingly little to do with the layout or the size of the room. It’s the small stuff. The light in the evening. What the worktop feels like under your hand. Whether the water tastes any good when you fill a glass at the tap instead of reaching for a bottle out of habit.
Walk into any kitchen that feels properly nice and you’ll notice it’s usually not one big thing doing the work. It’s five or six small things stacked on top of each other, none of which took a contractor or a loan to sort out. Here’s what’s actually worth spending a weekend on.
Handles First, Cabinets Later
Changing cabinet doors is a proper job, the kind that involves measuring, ordering, waiting, and probably an argument about hinges at some point. Changing the handles isn’t, and it does more for the look of a kitchen than it has any right to for something this simple.
Thin brushed brass or matte black bar handles look like someone thought about it. Plastic knobs from 2004 look like exactly that, even when the cabinets underneath them are in perfectly good nick. It’s one of those odd cases where the small detail carries more of the impression than the big surface it’s attached to.
Sort the Tap Out
You touch the tap constantly, probably more than any other single fixture in the kitchen, so it carries more weight visually than its size would suggest. Swap a standard chrome mixer for something in brushed steel or matte black and the whole sink area looks different, and the price gap between the two is usually smaller than people assume going in.
It’s worth thinking about the water itself at the same time, especially if you’re in a hard water area. Limescale builds up fast on taps and around the base of the sink, and it dulls even a brand new fixture within a few weeks of it going in. A lot of people fit an under-sink water filter alongside the new tap for that reason. Partly it keeps the tap looking cleaner for longer, but mostly it’s because the water actually tastes better coming out of it, which matters more than people expect once they’ve got used to it. It’s a small addition in terms of the work involved, but it’s the kind of thing that makes a kitchen feel finished rather than just recently tidied up.
Get Some Layers Into the Lighting
One ceiling light doing every job in the room is usually the actual problem, not the kitchen itself. Good kitchens, the ones that photograph well and feel even better in person, tend to use layers instead: something under the wall cabinets for prep work, a pendant or two over the island or table for atmosphere, and dimmable overheads you only bring up to full brightness when you’re cleaning up after dinner.
Clear the Counters Off
Look at any kitchen you’d genuinely call luxurious and there’s almost nothing sitting out on the counters. That’s not because the people who live there don’t cook, it’s because someone has been deliberate about what’s actually worth looking at and put everything else away in a drawer or a cupboard.
A couple of open shelves with decent ceramics on them. One well-chosen chopping board left out, rather than three mismatched ones. Maybe a plant, maybe not even that. Everything else, the toaster, the spice rack, the pile of takeaway menus, goes somewhere you can’t see it while you’re cooking.
A Bit of Texture Goes a Long Way
Tea towels that actually match each other, an apron hung on a hook by the oven, a runner across the table if you’ve got one, a woven basket for fruit instead of a plastic bowl from the back of a cupboard. None of it costs much on its own.
A kitchen that’s mostly tile, metal, and wood needs something soft in it somewhere, or the whole room starts to feel a bit cold and showroom-like rather than lived in. Keep the colours down to two or three tones across all of it and the effect reads as deliberate rather than thrown together, which is really the whole difference between a kitchen that feels styled and one that just feels cluttered with fabric.
The Grout Situation
Not exciting, and easy to put off indefinitely, but this one matters more than almost anything else on this list. Grubby grout and yellowing silicone around the sink or splashback will age a kitchen faster than anything else you could name, no matter how good the rest of the room looks or how much you’ve spent on it.
A grout pen and a fresh tube of silicone cost about ยฃ15 between them and take an afternoon to do properly, most of which is drying time rather than actual work.
Add It All Up
None of this needs a contractor, a permit, or a kitchen you can’t use for six weeks while someone rips it apart and puts it back together. It’s really just a matter of paying attention to the stuff people notice without ever quite clocking why they’ve noticed it. How things feel under your hand. Where the light falls in the evening. Whether the water runs clear.
Get a handful of these right, even just three or four of them, and the room ends up feeling like a lot more work went into it than actually did.
