How to Create a Modern Bathroom Without the Hassle

A beautiful bathroom is one thing, but to have one that still looks good without the constant cleaning is even better.

Itโ€™s easy to get caught up in colours, tiles and fittings when planning a bathroom, but the practical side matters just as much. The last thing you want is to finish a renovation and realise youโ€™ve created a room full of surfaces that show every watermark or take forever to clean.

A low-maintenance bathroom doesnโ€™t have to look plain or overly practical. With the right materials and a few sensible design choices, you can create a space that feels stylish but is much easier to live with. Here are a few things worth thinking about.

Keep the Layout Simple

The layout is always a good starting place. The more awkward corners and hard-to-reach areas you have, the more places there are for dust, water and grime to collect. Keeping things simple should help to make cleaning much easier.

Wall-hung furniture can work well because it leaves more of the floor exposed. Instead of trying to clean around the base of a vanity unit, you can simply mop underneath it. The same goes for toilets, where wall-hung or a back-to-wall design can have fewer awkward pipes and gaps to clean around.

You donโ€™t necessarily need to redesign the whole room around cleaning, but itโ€™s worth thinking about how easy everything will be to reach once fitted.

Choose Wall Finishes that Are Easy to Wipe Down

Walls are one of the areas that can quickly become a pain to maintain, especially tiles. The grout lines can take a little more effort to keep looking fresh, and over time, soap residue and moisture can build up around showers and baths.

If you want something a little easier to look after, PVC shower wall panels are worth choosing. They create a smooth surface with far fewer joins than tiles, which means there are fewer places for dirt and mould to collect. Most can simply be wiped down as part of your normal bathroom cleaning routine.

They also come in plenty of designs now, from simple neutral finishes to marble and stone effects, so choosing something practical doesnโ€™t mean compromising on the overall look.

For modern spaces, a large panel can also give the space a cleaner, more seamless finish.

Think Carefully About Your Flooring

Your bathroom floor has a lot to deal with, like wet feet, splashes and steam. So, it makes sense to choose something that can handle everyday use without needing too much attention.

Porcelain tiles are always a good option because theyโ€™re durable and straightforward to clean. Vinyl and SPC flooring can also work well if you prefer something slightly warmer underfoot.

Wood-effect finishes are useful too, if you want to soften the look of the room without having to use real wood. Whatever you choose, try to avoid anything that needs sealing or specialist cleaning products if reducing maintenance is your aim.

Be Realistic About Grout

Grout can look lovely when itโ€™s first installed, but itโ€™s also one of the first areas of a bathroom to show dirt. Itโ€™s a small design decision, but it can save you quite a bit of cleaning later.

If youโ€™re using tiles, choosing a slightly darker grout colour can make a big difference. White grout can look very crisp, but it tends to show discolouration much more quickly. A soft grey or warm neutral can be a little more forgiving while still keeping the room looking fresh.

You could also use larger tiles to reduce the amount of grout in the room altogether.

Choose Finishes that Donโ€™t Show Every Mark

Some surfaces can be easier to live with than others. Take high-gloss black taps for example. They can look amazing, but they also have a habit of showing every water mark and fingerprint. The same can be said for shiny tiles and dark bathroom furniture.

If you want something that needs less attention, matte and brushed finishes can be a little more forgiving.

Brushed brass, brushed nickel and softer black finishes often hide marks better than highly polished surfaces.

The same applies to vanity units and storage areas. Mid-tone finishes tend to be easier to keep looking tidy than very dark or very pale surfaces.

Make Storage Easy to Use

Good storage makes a huge difference. If every bottle and product is left out around the bath, shower and sink, you have to move everything before you can even start wiping surfaces down.

A vanity unit with drawers is ideal for keeping everyday toiletries out of sight but still easy to reach.

Wall cabinets can work well in smaller bathrooms, while built-in shower niches give you somewhere to put shampoo and shower gel without adding extra shelves.

The aim isnโ€™t to hide absolutely everything away. Itโ€™s to give the things you use somewhere sensible to live.

Avoid Too Many Open Shelves

Open shelving looks lovely in styled bathroom photos, but in real life it can quickly become another surface to dust.

If you like the look, one small shelf with a few carefully chosen items can work well. For everything else, closed storage is generally easier.

You can still add personality through artwork, towels, mirrors and accessories without filling every surface with decorative pieces that need moving whenever you clean.

Invest in Good Ventilation

Ventilation is probably one of the least exciting parts of designing a bathroom, but itโ€™s also one of the most important. Rooms that stay damp for long periods are much more likely to develop condensation and mould.

Keeping moisture under control makes the entire room easier to maintain. A good extractor fan will help remove moisture after showers and baths, while opening a window where possible can help keep fresh air moving through the room.

Itโ€™s worth making sure the extractor fan is powerful enough for the size of the bathroom rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.

Consider a Walk-In Shower

If youโ€™re planning a bigger renovation, a simple walk-in shower can be easier to clean than a traditional shower enclosure. The fewer tracks, frames and seals you have, the fewer areas there are to collect soap and limescale.

A single glass screen paired with large wall panels or tiles creates a much cleaner look and can be quicker to wipe down. Frameless or minimal-frame screens also suit a lot of modern bathroom designs, so itโ€™s one of those choices that works from both a practical and aesthetic point of view.

Make Cleaning Part of The Design

One of the best ways to create a low-maintenance bathroom is to think about cleaning before you buy anything.

Ask yourself simple questions as you go, such as:

  • Will this surface show water marks?
  • Can I easily reach behind it?
  • Does it need sealing?
  • Are there lots of grooves or joins?
  • Am I going to regret choosing this colour after a few months?

It doesnโ€™t mean you should avoid anything interesting or decorative. You just want to be realistic about how much time youโ€™re willing to spend looking after it.

A Low-Maintenance Bathroom Can Still Feel Stylish

Keeping a bathroom easy to maintain doesnโ€™t mean stripping all the personality out of it.

You can still use colour, interesting finishes and beautiful fittings. The key is choosing where to use them. Go simple with the larger surfaces and bring more character in through things that are easy to change, such as towels, mirrors, lighting and accessories.

In the end, the best low-maintenance bathroom is one you donโ€™t have to think too much about.
