Sister Sizes Explained: When Your Usual Size Doesn’t Fit

You’ve worn the same bra size for years, but a new style feels too tight in the band or loose in the cups. It’s frustrating, but it doesn’t always mean you need a completely new size. Sometimes the answer is a sister size, a simple trick that can help you find a better fit when your usual size isn’t working.

What Sister Sizes Are and How the Math Works

Sister sizes are bra sizes that share the same cup volume but have different band sizes. The key is understanding that cup letters aren’t fixed. A C cup on a 32 band holds less volume than a C cup on a 38 band. Cup size is always relative to the band.

The rule is simple: when you go up one band size, go down one cup size, and when you go down one band size, go up one cup size. For example, if you wear a 34C, your closest sister sizes are 32D and 36B. All three hold the same amount of breast tissue.

You can keep going in either direction. The sister sizes of 34C also include 30DD and 38A, though the further you move from your original size, the more the fit changes.

Sister sizing works because band and cup sizes are connected. When you change the band, you have to adjust the cup letter to keep the same volume. If you only change the band, the cups will be too big or too small.

Before relying on sister sizes, make sure your starting point is accurate. Learning how to measure bra size at home takes only a few minutes and helps you avoid guessing.

Signs You Need a Sister Size

Sister sizes are most useful when your cups fit well but the band doesn’t, or when a particular style runs differently than your usual brand. Here are common signs:

  • The band feels too tight, but the cups fit: Go up a band and down a cup. For example, move from 34C to 36B.
  • The band rides up your back, but the cups fit: Your band is too loose. Go down a band and up a cup, from 34C to 32D.
  • You’re on the tightest hook and the band still feels loose: It’s time to size down in the band and up in the cup.
  • A new brand or style fits differently: Different fabrics and designs stretch differently, so a sister size can solve the problem.
  • Your body has changed: Weight changes, pregnancy and hormonal shifts can affect your ribcage and breast volume differently.

If your cups don’t fit, either with gaps or spillage, sister sizing alone won’t fix it. You may need a different cup size or shape altogether.

Fit also depends on the style you choose. Some people prefer minimizer bras, which redistribute tissue for a smoother profile, while others want plunges or full coverage. The most comfortable bra is one that matches both your size and your shape.

Sister sizes are a handy tool, not a replacement for a proper fit. Use them to fine-tune when a band or style feels off, and check your measurements regularly. A small adjustment can make a big difference in comfort and support.
